I have copies of 3 letters written towards the end of the Civil War by a soldier who died (possibly of gangrene) on the long walk home from MS to AR. Reading them again recently I was reminded of this reproduction pic of a soldier catching a few winks of sleep as he made his trip home.

I went back thru this thread & this Planter’s hat never made it in. This hat came up at auction 12-15 yrs ago & now resides in the American Museum of the Civil War, Richmond, VA. It belonged to General P. G. T. Beauregard (1818 – 1893), the General who ordered the first shots fired at Fort Sumter to start the Civil War. After the War it was given to family friends where it remained for several generations.

It served as a reference for my clone.
