What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Finished the school year yesterday, so went to celebrate with Thai food. Etsuko was hatless, but I wore my Hornskov Mogul.

Today we went on a Costco run, me in my Brummel’s Homburg…

Today’s photos were taken at a Farmer’s Market (Seishu no Sato) that we visited on the way home. Not far from where we live, it is near the ancient home of Seishu Hanaoka, a very famous doctor (particularly in these parts), who lived from 1760 to 1835. He was a pioneer of anaesthesia, said to be the first to perform an operation using a general anaesthetic. He used his wife for his experiments, causing her to lose her sight due to side effects.

One of his direct descendants (still with the Hanaoka name) was a student of mine a few years back.

Headed out for some coffee in my new to me Royal Stratoliner (mid 50s). Posted some before and after pics of this one in the Post New Hats thread yesterday but today’s my first time wearing it out. Shaped the brim and crease off of some Great Depression era pictures of Texas cattlemen.
While living right in the middle of London I’ve been trying to strike a balance between not looking too crazy in a big city while still honoring my western/farming roots.

Headed out for some coffee in my new to me Royal Stratoliner (mid 50s). Posted some before and after pics of this one in the Post New Hats thread yesterday but today’s my first time wearing it out. Shaped the brim and crease off of some Great Depression era pictures of Texas cattlemen.
While living right in the middle of London I’ve been trying to strike a balance between not looking too crazy in a big city while still honoring my western/farming roots.

You have nicely pull off what you set out to do. My father was from country NSW in Australia and rocker country style hats, especially the Snowy River but when wearing such hats I fell like an “imposter”.

Thanks!! And yeah, when I’m in Kansas on my parents farm I’m in a wide brim Resistol western but I’d feel way too looked at wearing one of those in a big city. Started wearing shorter brims in response— so far have a modern Open road and now this vintage Stratoliner. Will probably pick up an Akubra Camp Draft next!

I for fun ran the hat past ChatGPT which I have “hacked” to be more Aussie in its response plus build my wardrobe “memory” with it. Can be bit of the fashion police on things like square toed shoes but losing up on other items like hats. So this is what it wrote.

That does sound brilliant — a fawn Homburg with a burgundy ribbon strikes a perfect balance between classic formality and modern flair. The softer color palette and ribbon choice would take the edge off the Homburg’s usual stiffness, making it easier to wear casually without looking like you’re on your way to a funeral or a board meeting in 1947.

That combo probably worked for three reasons:

1. Color Contrast – The fawn + burgundy pairing is visually rich without being loud. Burgundy adds personality, and fawn is one of those versatile neutrals that leans warm and wears well with casual jackets, knitwear, or even denim.

• It can be worn with a tweed blazer, linen jacket, or even a turtleneck and overcoat, depending on the season.

Would you consider adding one like that to your rotation? It would slot nicely between your fedora and your Akubra for structured but expressive looks.

The Hornskov isn’t really a Homburg. It’s a soft felt, and I’d probably call it a fedora with a pencil curl. As for the Brummel, it’s certainly been easier to wear as an everyday hat since I put the pinch in the crown. My other (traditionally shaped) Homburg gets the call up for my students’ entrance ceremonies and graduation ceremonies. I love wearing my Bowler too, though.

Going to be a gloomy, rainy day. Today the Akubra Coolabah gets the duty. When this one came to me it was a bit bigger brim than I liked so I trimmed it to a 2-3/4" brim. Also replaced the plain hatband with a feathered one off of a Stetson Weekender. Took the Stetson pin off and managed to come up with an free Akubra pin (Thanks to the nice folks at David Morgan). The feather was supplied by a friend that raises Guinea fowl. Just had to affix the edge fuzzies to it. Really like this hat

We all know how difficult it can be to show colours accurately in hat photography. The Hornskov is Natural (close enough to fawn) with a dark brown (definitely not burgundy) ribbon!

Ok. Still learning and good to know. I have found an excellent hat maker in Melbourne so have had two hats made but in 100% western weight beaver. Looking to expand my style range. The trick I find is “owning” the look. I have a fantastic remote Queensland country style hat bit similar to a ten gallon hat but it sort of looks wrong on me but when in the NT a couple of stock hands were in town complete with beaten up Ute and they owned the look.

Pure ChatGPT. It is actually quite astute and picks up things. I take a picture of my outfits and ask it to review and rate them. It commented something look good but an expresso grenadine silk tie would make it pop. Ok as fate would have it a Japanese person running an accessory business in Italy had one 160cm on special (still not cheap as three fold, hand rolled, etc, etc) so shelled out the readies. Turned up and put it on the outfit and it is a compliment puller.

Yes colours are hard to get right especially under some lighting. Fawn can be often appear as grey. Though I would have sworn blind it was burgundy until I looked again. Amazing what you mind remembers.

Yes I agree. Work is based in South Hobart which is still very much a village in feel and if I head to the shop hatless I am asked did I leave it behind and they look forward to seeing them.

Tomorrow I will post a picture of a hat I like but do not “own”.
