I am with you that an RMC or RC jacket does not look “better” than an Aero or Vanson, but that you “fail to see much difference“ is a bit rich.

There are hardly any makers that are visually more distinct than Aero/Vanson on the one hand and RMC and their sisters on the other.

Yeah, I can see some differences, specially in design/aesthetic choices (which to me makes Vanson the most different out of them), but I meant as in differences that unequivocally makes one jacket better than the other (or justifies the price jump at a glance).

Thanks for the clarification. I am with you. Unless you specify what you mean by “quality” (stitch count, even stitching, French seams, skivving?), there is no objective “better”.
The leather used by both Aero and Vanson as a default are much thicker than the “normal” horsehide of many Japanese makers which per se requires a different sewing tecnique.

Part of the price difference is choice of hide. A prime shinki-tanned hide would affect the price in the region of EUR 200-300. IF you had access. Customs/VAT will be another 20%. But yes, there is a generous upcharge if you buy a Japanese jacket outside Japan.
Its worth noting that its quite similar the other way round.

It’s normal human behaviour, I guess. We all tend to idolise something for whatever reason.
For boys of my generation, all things American were just the bee’s knees. The landscapes, the skylines, the movies, the gadgets.

I mean there’s some legit reasons. Since the US stayed behind in Japan after WW2 there was a metric sh*t ton of leftover gear and clothing. It infiltrated the Japanese secondhand market and the leading reason why they have an obsession with vintage and repo American military style. You’d think they’d despise it or be indifferent. But a lot of the founders of the companies we know now were kids in the aftermath of WW2 and grew up with this stuff, seeing it everyday and owning original pieces. Over the years as always happens the market dried up so they started creating it on their own. Since so many Americans stayed there; they also grew up seeing American media, film, tv, and soldiers riding their motorcycles in thier perfectos and Trojans and so on. They saw Marlon Brando and James Deen. So they wanted what they saw and couldn’t necessarily have so they used their ingenuity and said we will just make our own versions.

And now Americans are obsessed with their films, video games, clothing and tech.
