What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

I had hoped to fine tune the bash before showing this guy off, but I've been in an Airbnb all week without a water kettle so this is what I've been wearing.

This is such a hard crown to tame - it is huge (>7 inches) and has a massive taper side to side. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I love this hat, though. Once I get the crown right, it will be unstoppable.

One way to make less taper is to do a diamond crease, but make the diamond a symmetrical one and less marquis like, if that makes sense. With a 7” crown, you’d have to deeply push in the crease, but with that much crown, doing the squared up diamond it’d likely help cure side taper more than usual.
As an aside, the way you have it now actually creates an even more side to side tapered look.
From what I can tell and hear, Gannon makes a good hat, though.

Odd to me that the liner in this Imperial Bantam isn’t sporting the matching Imperial liner and has this typical 3X liner. I’ve seen someone post one like this’n recently that has the matching imperial liner. This 3X one is sewn in factory style, so I can only guess it’s original.

The stitching of the overwelted brim is a funky dusty reddish color, but impossible to tell.

1970's 4X Open Road. The ribbon was toast, so a new 6 ligne ribbon was installed. The wider ribbon... It hides a nasty stain that's lying there.

@SnowyViking , I have received some time ago the same stetson Penn but I hardly wear it , since I have really too many hats I decided to sell this

maybe you can see my listing and recommend (your experience with this super quality hat) it to possible buyers, I am afraid. that The Stetson Penn is not very well known among non European Stetson aficionados

I've tried those widening styles multiple ways but it doesn't eliminate enough of the taper unless I push the crease in literally 3-4 inches, which of course means I have a massive amount of felt to deal with as a dome. It just ends up looking forced and unnatural.

What I decided to do was embrace the taper. I'm not trying to avoid it or even minimize it, just trying to find a way to make it work in an interesting way.

I'll try to post more photos this weekend once I get back home and have steam.

And yes, Gannon makes a great hat. I think mine just didn't bake long enough and it tapered to hell the very first time I steamed it. I still love it though.

Yes, that is still an option I'm considering. I'm not a gambler hat kinda guy, but I might give that one another go if I can't work something out with a center crease. Maybe a tall gambler with a horse shoe center or some such.

This is definitely a tricky one and always reminds me of @The Shoe's struggles with his Hornskov (except I think his challenge is having too little felt to work with?).

Ive done a couple cowboy conversion project hats that had tall crowns. ( this one is 7" open crown) I came to the opinion that as long as the final hat looks good from the outside, theres nothing wrong with a "deep" top end. Looked a bit odd at first but they grew on me. I worked the side dents inward a bit and that alone pulled the height down a bit. One thing that really helped me on a couple of these was an acetone bath to get rid of a bunch of stiffner from the felt. Much easier to work. Thick, soft felt is a pleasure to wear in chilly weather

That’s right. My attempt at a telescope crown with that one was kind of a disaster. I’m happy with it now, but it took a while. I still wish I had gone with the regular tall crown of the Rancher.

I recently watched a documentary on the Great Depression. As always, I was fascinated by the hats. To me, your hat and crease appear very similar to many of those I saw in the video. I really like it and wouldn't change a thing.
