Barbisio Titan, size 59 or 7 3/8 US

The felt is the color "Umbria" region of Central Italy, this is one of the most beautiful colors among those that Barbisio has put into production over the years. It comes from the historic factory in Sagliano Micca.

Like his brother it has been used for years as a display in a Biella clothing store. It has a single small defect: the yellow cellulose protective cap has shattered, it is in excellent condition.

The felt is of medium texture, slightly thicker than its sibling in green. The hat has a classic Italian shape between the fifties and sixties with a simple and elegant line, at Barbisio they have been masters in simplifying the designs and making them fantastic in production with very accurate workmanship and finishes.

The measures are the following: the raw ones are at 6.5 cm., the crown at 11 cm. and the ribbon is about three centimeters.

I have had other hats in this color that have gone all over the world, this is the first in my size, fits perfectly, which remains in the collection

Wonderful duo. The felt ribbon with cord embellishment is stunning... I've never seen anything like it. I've had good success removing damaged paper liner protectors from Borsalino hats (a tweezer helps for the last bits, though in this hat the broken paper is not disturbing at all. Great finds.

The size label that the seller said wasn’t there is there, and it’s a lot smaller than the measurements I was given. Bummer...great old hat.

Dang.. too bad about the size. That would have been a great hat on you!

Here’s one that was closer to my size. It was a long distance Craigslist find and the seller was willing to ship. It turned out to be a 7 1/2 rather than the 7 5/8 or 7 3/4 I was hoping for so it’s also on the block.

Dobbs Westward. 2 3/4” bound brim and 5 5/8” open crown.

The felt is so nice on this hat that it’s a temptation to size it up, but I’d rather it go to someone that will fit it unaltered.

Disney: dark brown felt with a copper ribbon and back bow. 5 1/4” open crown, 2 1/4” wide brim with a felted / Cavanagh edge. A nice hat...later 1950s?

Valentine the Hatter in confederate gray. 3 1/4” raw edge brim and 5 1/2” open crown. The felt is substantial but with a nice hand. It came with a CSA emblem pinned to the front, but that could start a riot these days...and I’m not into re-enactments so the badge came off.

The size tag is a bit odd. I measured the hat using my millinery sizing tool and came up with 7 3/8. I also noticed that the only marking on the sweatband was the name of the person who commissioned it. I suspect that the hat started life as a 7 1/8 and was at some point resized to a 7 3/8. Too bad they didn’t go to 7 5/8.

Just picked up this early 1950s Dobbs Fifteen locally for the original sticker price.

Very rare indeed and probably an interesting history to go with it.

Makes you wonder if some sellers actually look for a label at all! Nice hat though, Brent.
