Post New Hats Here!

[Rmccamey]

Wow, what a terrific thrift store find!

While I was out on my exercise ride this morning I stopped at my favorite thrift and got a couple of hats. First a cheapo straw

Seems a bit unusual to find a thin ribbon with a 2 1/4" brim.

When I found the one I have I thought the same thing. After learning that Lyndon B. Johnson wore the Wide Country I've been looking back at pics & it is obvious it is what he preferred in a brim.

I can understand why it's your favourite thrift store, Michael. Nice finds, especially the Resistol.

^^^^^ Good gets @Michael A !

Thanks Bob. Great blue roll brim you got and great that it fits.

Thanks Randy. Nice hats don't show up often, but every now and then.

Thanks for the info, Jack. After looking at a few LBJ photos and my hat I'm sort of coming around to the idea of 2 1/4" for a western dress hat brim. I see your hat has a lower lot number than mine.

It's a good one, Steve. They had a couple of nice shirts there today too, but since I wasted all my money on hats I didn't get them. Ha ha.

Thanks all,
Michael

Good catch, Michael. We don't see a lot of them but they're out there as HJ pointed out. I once owned a Churchill Beaver 25 with a 2 1/4" brim. I have a Dunlap as well that has a 2" brim.

Thanks BB. I guess, now that I think of it, I have a Marathon with a 2 1/4" brim.

I haven't opened them up and measured, but my feeling is that the Marathon has a shorter crown and more taper than the Wide Country. I have to say that for being a size big and an extra long oval the Wide Country is settling in on my head pretty well. I think they may have been a bit generous on that sizing. Still need to do a bit of toying with the flange to get that brim up look working.

[Hat and Rehat]

Just a couple of quick and dirty pics of my newly unboxed Texas Hatters Hi Roller in dark blue. I did not expect this to fit, but it does! There is no hat band as it was just some chicken pluckings strung together.

That's quite the catch, Bob.

I grabbed another orphan no one was bidding. A little staining I'm confident I'll get out, and some mothing, mainly on the back, but I'm quite pleased with this Stetson Royale De Luxe gambler treatment dress hat. It fits nicely, as well. I expected the 7 1/4 to be loose.

Thanks, it does have a nice dressy look. Pretty high quality felt for the era I think.

Great finds Michael!!

The straw hat looks like an Amish hat. Probably more sturdily built than most yard cutters, if it is, and that Resistol!! Man that's truly a lucky find. That thing is absolutely amazing. What a catch!

Thanks Scott. Not exactly the finds of the century, but they do make for a good month of hat hunting in the local environs. The Resistol is probably the most minty hat I've found in the last year here.

Thanks Dale. And good eye on the straw. Not only is the braid substantial, but they have have a double braid at the brim edge, so it is a stout straw. It may even stand up to bicycle use. I'll test it this morning on the street out front. The store I got it at is run by the Mennonite church and a lot of Mennonite and Amish shop there. I have never seen an Amish felt hat there though , and I've often wondered why not. Certainly see plenty of them being worn in the store. When I was standing outside the store yesterday getting ready to leave I saw a gentleman going into the store wearing a fine looking fur felt fedora of about the same dimensions as the Resistol. Good thing I got there early. Ha ha.

Thanks,
Michael

Thanks DD. I'll agree. And after a brief test ride it seems the straw may be up to bicycle use, which would be very nice.

Thanks,
Michael
