Norman Rockwell or Edward Hopper?

Hopper, his work, more than Rockwell's, IMHO, captures life's complexity, ennui and emotional darkness in a style that puts the eye at a well-balanced distance to see both the overall story and the few details necessary to fill in the narrative. Rockwell does his "thing" very well and brings in more ambiguity than is popularly assumed, but while wonderful for their "of the period" snapshot, I am never as challenged or moved by his work as I am by Hopper's.

Nighthawks or Automat?

I enjoy both.
Rockwell I find to be more entertaining in a nostalgic sense.

There's a lot of what you might call subversiveness in Rockwell, if you know what to look for.

Himber vs. Hayton is a tough choice, but I'll go with Himber because I think Joey Nash was one of the best vocalists of the thirties.

Sally Singer. Her, er, "strong" vocal on the Leo Reisman waxing of "I Get a Kick Out of You" is a favorite, but I'd prefer Ramona, or more particularly Irene Taylor to either.
