This is my 5 year olds band shirt for the season. Can't believe my oldest is a Senior this year!

The band dress is amazing, great work! Do you have an embroidery machine for the band shirt? What kind? I have a BabyLock but rarely use it.

SheBear, cute skirt! I have the same fabric, but in red. I wish my dress came out as nicely as your skirt, but it was too big, despite a perfect fitting muslin.

Not quite a 'show us what you've made', but... I recently started Simplicty 2123 from 1945- view 2 in royal blue gingham with solid royal blue contrast on the shoulders and belt (and pockets, maybe, I'm debating).

Has anyone else tried it? I've been having major difficulties and it'd be good to get some feedback! This blogger posted about her difficulties with it, which made me really nervous, and I have to say, in my (short) sewing career I have *never* had so much trouble with anything! It's crazy- the bust and armhole sizing is ridiculous- for a 36 bust it measured close to 50 inches flat (fifty!!!) and the armhole was halfway down the bodice. I had to sew 2 inch side seams and do some major wizardry with the sleeve to get it to fit. Now I've finally got the bodice together, the gathers at the bottom are super unflattering, so I'm going to try and replace them with darts, which will be huge! Aaaand, because the entire dress now looks more like a 50s housedress than the 40s frock on the envelope, I'm thinking of gathering the skirt, but, ugh... seriously, if I had known how much fiddling I would have to do for such a simple-looking dress I don't think I would have started it

Did you make a muslin first or go straight to your fashion fabric? If you are still in the muslin stage, it would be easy to get rid of some of the ease in the bottom so that the dart isn;t too big.

Shebear, I haven't tossed it yet, but I don't think it's salvagable. I made it using this pattern and the shoulders are so wide that they keep falling off.

Unfortunately, (and to my detriment!) I have never made a muslin first! I know that I should! I just muddle through, with the help of my Mum, though even she was stuck with this one! I can't fathom quite why the bodice was the way it was. I understand that the style is meant to be slightly blousy, but it was ridiculous, really.

By the way, Kamikat, I love the things you make! I aspire to be able to sew as professional-looking stuff as you do! (As an aside, I was totally on a high after the last two things I made - they looked wonderful and very polished- but this dress has knocked me back a bit- I was about to give up on it today )

Frenchy, I am like you, I usually don't make a muslin first. Don't let one pattern get ya down! Some patterns are just better than others

Love that flamingo fabric
Sometimes I envy you US citizens - it's not really easy to get fun fabrics over here. And if you find any, they are soo expensive.
That's probably the reason why you see so many polka dots on retro events that it can make you sick

Thanks Wahine! It helps to live in Florida. We get all the tropical, alligator and flamigo prints. lol I actually found a great one the other day with key limes on it.

SheBear, I love love love that flamingo pencil skirt! So fun and the little ruffle is gorgeous! I made a dress recently in a lovely flamingo print fabric, quite similar- bright turquoise with green trees and pink flamingos, from a 1957 pattern. I should totally put up a photo (and of everything I make- I know you all would appreciate it! )

Also, I finished that *awful* Simplicity pattern I posted about earlier. It's a nice dress, definitely wearable- in fact, as it's more casual than some of the other dresses I've made I'll probably wear it a lot! I was so glad to have finished, though- it seems like it took forever, and everything that could go wrong, did Even though I love the shoulder detail I will *not* be using this pattern again!
