to me philosophy is the art of stating the obvious in the most complex, laborious way possible.

...or as Charles Bukowski once said "an intellectual is a person who says a simple thing in a difficult way. a poet is someone who says a difficult thing in a simple way".

Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige (1906?-1982), whose "Rules For Staying Young" are as valid a foundation for a world view as any I've ever seen --

1. Avoid fried meats, which angry up the blood.

2. If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts.

3. Keep the juices flowing by jangling around gently as you move.

4. Go very light on the vices, such as carrying on in society — the social ramble ain't restful.

5. Avoid running at all times.

6. And don't look back — something might be gaining on you.

I'm also partial to the philosophy of Fred Allen (1896-1956), whose view of the human condition actually fits in nicely with that of Paige:

"Live every day as though it were your last -- and someday you'll be right."

What is your favorite work by Augustine?
By any chance, did you ever study Chesterton's "Orthodoxy" while
in seminary?

Speaking of theologians, I'm partial to TERTULLIAN: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quintus_Septimius_Florens_Tertullianus

"Tertullian, the prince of realists and practical theologian, carried his realism to the verge of materialism. This is evident from his ascription to God of corporeity and his acceptance of the traducian theory of the origin of the soul. He despised Greek philosophy, and, far from looking at Plato, Aristotle, and other Greek thinkers whom he quotes as forerunners of Christ and the Gospel, he pronounces them the patriarchal forefathers of the heretics (De anima, iii.)."

Admittedly, he is a *bit* harsh on women:

"Do you not know that you [women] are Eve? The judgment of God upon this sex lives on in this age; therefore, necessarily the guilt should live on also. You are the gateway of the devil; you are the one who unseals the curse of that tree, and you are the first one to turn your back on the divine law; you are the one who persuaded him whom the devil was not capable of corrupting; you easily destroyed the image of God, Adam. Because of what you deserve, that is, death, even the Son of God had to die.”

Tertullian errs the Greeks; however, I will admit that Plato's
conceptualization (theory and practical spheres) of the human soul
went beyond philosophic bounds to imperil the foundation of
'De Anima.'

Which makes at least part of Tertullian's stance understandable.

Only as it applies within this Platonic context; otherwise Tertullianism
lacks substance and is little more than rant.
