A bit of way-advance notice to Loungers who might be planning to visit the New England area next summer -- we're going to be showing Oz in all its big screen Technicolor splendor in early July 2007! Watch this URL for further news --http://www.rocklandstrand.com/calendar.html?sd=07/01/2007&f=lst

(If all goes according to plan, the program may also include an entertaining and informative little short subject written by yours truly...)

OZzzzzzzz

A number of years ago here in Baltimore our Art Deco Theater "The Senator" showed Oz on the BIG screen. It was not the current WB cleaned up deluxe DVD on sale now though.

However the catch was a chance to meet Meinhardt Raabe, The Coroner in person. He wore street clothes but had his cape & the famous curled up coroner's hat. Raabe is still alive like 91/92 years old.

OOOhhh, I'd so love to take a visit to Maine to see one of my all time favorite movies. Of course, an added bonus would be meeting Lizzie in person:)

Munchkins

:eek:fftopic: Two of the Oz munchkins opened a tavern on
Chicago's far Southside area near Midway Airport; complete
with "little people" tables and chairs.
The Wizard of OZ was written in Chicago by Frank Baum,
near where 'OZ Park' is located.

I've seen a large screen theatrical projection of the digitally restored version, and it looks spectacular. The audio was also restored form the original music, effects and vocal tracks. It's now in Dolby Digital 5.1.

The new DVD is a transfer from the digital master. Hopefully this will be a DCI screening (digital cinema initiative).

LOIS JANUARY

This past August Lois January passed away at age 93 & was the last known non- Munckin cast member of the Wizard of Oz.

January played the singing Emerald City manicurist who did Dorothy's nails. She also held the cat in the final Emerald City scene where Toto jumped out of Dorothy's arms to give chase missing Prof. Marvels balloon.

Oh! Come to think of it, I don't recall if I have ever seen this movie in a theatre! I'll have to ask my parents...

I have aways heard about the hanging munchkin from a tree urban legend... never did see it.[huh]

Never Seen in Theatre

Katiemakeup, interesting point many have NEVER seen it in a theater. It was really the repeated yearly TV showings starting in the 1950's that turned OZ into the cult/icon status that it still holds today. I saw it twice in the theater in the early 1950's then again in the early 1990's. 40 year gap aside from the TV showings & for many years in only black & white.

I would love to see this in the theater. We recently showed it to my 4 yr old daughter. Made a very big deal out of it...popped the popcorn, got out our big movie screen and digital projector....even took some home video of her awed expression as the movie went from b&w to technicolor!

When I was little, they would still re-release movies like all the disney clasiscs to the theaters. I saw them all at the Art Deco Palace Theater in Olean, NY. Sadly, the place was torn down to build an Ekerd Drugs. I did a google search recently to see if I could even find pics of the Palace so that I could show my husband and children this place that was so meaningful to my childhood....all I found were advertisements for some furniture company that bought the rubble and is incorporating things like ceiling tiles in to cabinets and such.
