I had the 'Vibram' commando soles put on my pair and they are great except for the fact that I get gravel from my path stuck in the tread often, however it just goes to show how decent the tread and grip really is.

I get that with my Trickers and Sargent heavy brogues too as they have Commando soles. As Cookie says, keep off the fancy wood floors!

Just got my WL's back from the cobbler with new heels...also buffed the edges for me to get rid of that pasty naked leather look:

Matt - thanks for these pics - I think you may have just solved my black dress boot problem. I am a brown leather guy, but I really need a pair of black shoes to wear with black slacks (I'm just not grown up enough to wear proper dress shoes). :) I have been looking at Iron Rangers, but can't find the black ones for less than $250 and I don't care for the one piece soles. For $40-$50 more I can get the Lennons (depending on whether I get the full leather lining).

Now that I've seen your Lennons, I think this could be the route I will take. I'd prefer to send the money William Lennon's way anyhow. Those will dress up well enough for my needs and they look great - particualrly with that thicker heel cap on them. What size are yours, just out of curiosity?

Which model boot are they exactly Matt? Are they the more expensive Derby Boot without the decorative holes or are they another model? They are exactly what I'm looking for but in brown! I really like the toecaps.

As I said earlier, I have a pair of their black Ammo boots with heavy Vibram Commando soles and love them but I'd really like a pair of those you have in brown to go with them!

Many of the Lennon boots I see on FL seem to be custom versions of their standards and I'm never sure what I'm looking at!

Good thread. I've just put in a colour query to them as they seem better value than Red Wing and probably tougher.

Update - they're sending me samples of black and hopefully cordovan (or something like it) for their Derby boot, so we'll see what that looks like.

I've just received two samples of black - Horween Latigo and Horween Chrome Excel. Other than the CXL having a brown inner hide and the Latigo grey, I haven't a clue what the difference is.

Can anyone please help? I've not heard back from Lennon and won't until Monday now.

Be interested to hear how you get on with that. I have a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers and they are utterly superb. Hard to imagine them being bettered (subject to personal preferences - I know not everyone cares for the rubber soles), but it's certainly true that they are pricey here in the UK... Not sure of the difference in the US, (though I know Alden Indys are something like GBP150 cheaper over there, on average!), but if the Lennons are equivalent, they are a significant saving.

I have the RW Iron Rangers in Hawthorn (only £125, so a real bargain) and like them a lot, but my jeans colour has rubbed off on them which didn't help. I reckon the Lennons will be similar but much tougher. I also like the idea of a leather lining for only £10.

I'm not convinced the RW's are worth the full £230 in the UK, hence my reluctance to buy another pair, seeing as the cheap source doesn't sell them now.

I ordered mine with the leather lining(by the way it's £10 per boot), and when I went to collect them they had forgotten to do this, however after trying them on I was still delighted so didn't really mind, they really are extremely tough but comfortable boots!

I posted my specs both in the mail and as an attachement, called every two weeks, and they delivered. I'm now commissioning a black pair with high tech insulated moulded foot liners and rubber outers soles. More anon.

I've just ordered black Horween chrome excel Derby's, lined and with commando soles. The price is extremely reasonable, so it'll be interesting to see how good they really are at that price.
