Sloppy spelling is worse than sloppy dress. It is the product of a sloppy mind.

From now on, I will call out every misspelling I catch in the Lounge.

Dyslexics, nonnative English speakers, and the gravely undereducated will be exempt from my wrath.

Let's start with some basics.

"Borsalino" is not spelled "Borsolino".

"Grosgrain" is not spelled "grossgrain".

"Paid" is not spelled "payed".

"Alcohol" is not spelled "alcohohol". Not even when you're drunk.

Such garbled phrases as "I wish I had of got a before picture" should be taken outside and shot.

More to come.

Great idea!!

I am not a native english speaker (spanish) and welcome corrections from anyone that actually knows more than I do about the english language. Bring it on, Marc. I love that idea. :cheers1: By the way, if you don't want Marc to catch you misspelling try going here, www.m-w.com

u ppl r all meen....this isnt an englsh class....lol

My fingers hurt.

As an aspiring writer, it kills me to see people typing like that all the time. As much as I love the internet, I hate what chat speak is doing to the English language.

For those of you who want a way to quickly check for spelling errors, the new Google Toolbar has a one-click spell check that highlights all the misspelled words.

And I'll correct anyone who is isn't sitting up straight, or chewing gum while typing.

I'm just flattered that you give us credit for being ABLE to chew gum while typing! :p And my typing teacher taught us to sit up straight while typing, so that's covered...

Bad spellers of the world, untie! ha ha

It is indeed harsh and also not good manners to correct someone in speech or in writing. There will be no one going around, in the Observation Bar at least, correcting others in an "of the manor born" fashion. Feel free to post without fear of reprisal.

Regards to all,

J
Sounds like someone wants to shut down a thread before we get rolling on it. Manners! That's a good one.

How about changing the content of the thread to "pet peeves" in writing? Here are a couple of mine:

--"looser" instead of "loser" ("That guy was such a looser.")

--"Your welcome" instead of "You're welcome." I have a co-worker (coworker?) who writes this all the time but I have yet to ask him, "My welcome what...?"

That's what I've noticed too Feraud....there are some spelling mishaps here and there, but on the average, I think people are doing just fine

By nature and training, I'm a stickler for spelling and grammar, but try to overlook people's foibles on the web. One of my biggest pet peeves that I cannot ignore is "prolly." I don't know if this has been adopted as 'Netspeak because it types out two letters faster, or if people really don't know how to spell "probably."

What I hate to see are spelling and grammatical mistakes in professional works, such as advertisements, books, newspapers, and their ilk. I don't know how many times I've read books where the author ended his/her sentences with a preposition, and it was not corrected by the editor.

Okay, I'll quit now, for I could go on for many paragraphs.:p
