This piece of foam was in one of the boxes from my recent HATCO Outlet purchases.

It's roughly the size of a fedora brim, 10 1/2" x 12 1/2" x 3/16".
As you can see, it has slits cut from the outer edge toward the center, and from the inner edge toward the outside.

What do you swuppose it is?

Well, sort of.

The hat that came with that foam originally had a thin plastic sheet (like Saran Wrap) which covered the crown and brim. That kerfed piece of foam then slid over that and held the plastic in place on the hat.

Probably also serves to protect the brim from compression marks caused by the cardboard ring in the hat box.

The crown fits into the slits and it is used in the box to help protect the hat.

In this era of multi-tasking, it's a shame for anything to have only one purpose. I remembered I had a 7 1/2 Borsalino, and a 7 1/8 head. So, I tried removing a few wedges and tucking it under the sweatband, as a shim. Like this:

I must say I'm pleased with the result. I'd bet HATCO could sell these things for this very purpose! :)
