When I first heard the story of Vivian Maier, which was quite recently, I was unconvinced that it all wasn't a hoax. But no, apparently it isn't. She worked as a nanny and lived and died in obscurity. Her fame has come only in the past few years.
There's an almost tactile quality to this photo. My eyes are telling me the feel of that hat, that steering wheel, the seat upholstery, the suit fabric, the watch chain.
Sounds like she was the "WeeGee" (Arthur Fellig) of Chicago. In fact, that photo of the guy in the car looks like one of WeeGee's murder scenes, except that he would have included the head wound in the shot.
