hi there,

I was lucky enough to acquire a singer 107-1 and am having difficulty keeping the sweatband aligned with the brim break of the hat as I sew. I’m sure it takes some practice, which I’ve been doing, but it seems to want to veer away from the brim break as I sew and up into the crown of the hat.

I’m not sure if this is total user error or if there is a certain technique in holding the hat and guiding it as you use the machine.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Congratulations on your machine. Please post some photos of it on the Photos of Hatter's Tools thread. https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/photos-of-hatters-tools.27503/

Would love to see pictures of it. I own a modern clone.

Does anyone have tips for straightening out the reed tape on a Reeded sweat after sewing the ends together? The tape tends to “ruffle” which makes it tough to sew into the hat

Wow! That is the closest I've seen yet.
That looks to be a version of this Pribil Model 29 machine that was made for sewing in unreeded sweatbands.

I've never seen one in person Ben and didn't even know they existed until mayserwegener posted a picture of one in the "photos of hatters tools" thread (page 115). They've obviously been around for a while as evidenced by this picture of a much older model. I'm curious though. Are you looking for a machine to specifically install unreeded sweatbands?

Thanks, Mayser. I haven't seen any of your gorgeous hats in a while, but I - and this is unfortunate considering the circumstances - I now find myself with time to browse TFL.

Also, does a straw braid machine work to sew in sweatbands (of the old Willcox & Gibbs variety)?
Before I purchased my ASM 1107-1 sweatband machine I tried diligently to install reeded leather sweats with one of my W&G straw braid machines. I even tried to use a straw braid set-up machine that was designed to sew sweats into soft caps. I had no luck achieving satisfactory results with any of them. I don't think one can beat that original Singer design for getting the job done properly.
To second Mayser's opinion about that Pribil machine, it does appear to be missing a few essential parts. Also, I believe that machine was designed for unreeded sweatbands only.
