Vintage Military Glove Sizing

So I recently saw some vintage US military leather gloves on ebay marked size 4. Were military gloves sized differently in the past, or are the gloves just that small? From what I see online, a size 4 glove would be a few sizes down from a modern XS. Any thoughts on this?

I have seen three different sizing systems used in gloves.

First the basic XS, S, M, L, XL (pretty basic)

Second a number system that indicates the number of inches around the widest part of your hand. See here: http://jtillman.com/material-safety/tillman-university/independent-study/how-to-size/

Third, a number system that indicated the number of inches across the widest part of your hand. See here: https://olympiagloves.com/glove-size-chart/

So I think a size 4 would be roughly the same as a size 8...
