I found this martial-art called Bartitsu from Victorian London and Paris mostly, it is praticed by Sherlock Holmes.

That is awesome! I have been wanting to get a walking stick and this should come in handy. Sticks and canes are just handy overall. For knocking on doors, pointing things out, strolling, swaggering, there are tons of uses!

Get one of a hardwood (walnut looks really nice, like a gun stock) or hickory f you want strenth, Also, do not, I repaet do not get one with a pool cue joint in the middle so it can break apart for travel, they do not work and keep the stick from being strong and stable as you walk (personal experence). I want to get a nice early-Victorian one, like the Count of Monte Cristo has, all custom done up with my inicials etc. and a pocket knife compartment.

I own a few of their knives...ALL very exceptional quality, definately rugged enough to outlast any competition...I would expect the same quality from their sticks and canes.

I see they're owned by Cold Steel. Boy have they come a long way from just making tanto knives. I guess I haven't been keeping up very well on the knife scene!

Boy it used to be just Gerber, Buck, Randall and Russell. Now there's hundreds of them.

Actually a few years ago I bought a very nice folder from Microtech. I thought the name was dumb and didn't sound very "knifelike" but they sure can make a blade. I don't even know when they come on the scene...

Great Post! I consider myself a student of martial arts, yet I had never heard of this. I am very grateful that you have pointed it out. One thinks of John Steed when looking at those diagrams. I am sure it would work equally well with an umbrella. I have a solid hickory Brigg umbrella. I may have to incorporate this into my oeuvre. Thanks!

I was thinking Steed too. My friend and I also worked on techinques with golf clubs using some of these articles as guides. Oh, what I do when a play golf (3 times a week)

Without getting in to a political discussion, If I we're anticipating the need for protection I sure wouldn't be carrying a sword cane...I do like the look of them though...maybe when I turn 70 I'll get one.

The ironic thing for me is that I bought two sword canes back in the mid 80's when they allowed them to be shipped to Calif. The real neat thing, I still have them A police friend of mine saw one and jokingly asked if it was one of those hide-a-drink canes. I said no. He then drew the sword and was rather surprised...he just laughed and gave it back, told me to stay out of trouble with it. On a side note he suggested I carry a firearm instead. Only a misdemeanor with a gun, felony with a knife/sword and more likely to not even get arrested.

I love knives,...and swords too...BUT!!...I'll Always opt for the 45 ACP...It's the self-defense equivalent to a Mack Truck equivalent during an end of life crisis!
