Let me to recommend you an outstanding book: "A Writer at War: Vasily Grossman with the Red Army, 1941-1945", edited by Anthony Beevor. It's an indispensable work to understand the history of soviet people and soldiers during WWII, and a really touching book. Grossman looks very well as a soviet Ernie Pyle.

I almost bought this yesterday, but I've only just finished Beevor's own Stalingrad and that was such a depressing read that I couldn't face reading any more about the Russian front just yet. I've got Rising '44 by Norman Davies (an account of the Warsaw uprising) in my to-read pile but I can't face that either. My next WW2 history will be Hitler's Mediterranean Gamble by Douglas Porch, and that's an 800 page monster that should kep me occupied for a while.
