Vapididity defined: Sorority dress code

Looks to me like a straight forward and well articulated guidline informed by the author's tastes and sensibilities. No doubt many women in the author's peer group will find the guide helpful and appropriate, others will find it silly, wrongheaded, or oppresive. But hey, the same applies to any sort of fashion guide, right? ;)

The article outlines some of the more eccentric comments but I went in and browsed the actual pages. Many of the rules seem to fall in line with more conservative ideas about vintage style people talk about on the Lounge.

However, the person who wrote the guideline does have a streak of... fashion dictator running through them.

Isn't that the point?

Now, I must clarify that my understanding, such as it is, of Fraternities and Sororities at US higher educaltional institutions is mostly garnered from US movies and television, and so may not especially reflect reality. That said, they seemed mostly to me to be an exercise in creating a herd for those who wish for the security of such an organisation. They do seem oddly pointless and juvenile to me, but that's to personal taste, really.

I admit I missed out on the delightful social conditioning of modern post-secondary education, but isn't the point of "Rush Week" to enforce the group will on candidates for membership and see how well they fit in? Isn't this just the modern-day descendent of beanies and raccoon coats?

I guess it is if one wishes to join that herd.

I thank my punk rock roots for never having craved such nonsense! ;)

If one does not wish to associate with this sort of person, one certainly has that choice.

I see no problem.

Edit: And I would also be less aesthetically offended if more girls where I go to college had half these rules imposed on them. No extreme low rise pants, or cork shoes indeed!

Thank you for sharing. Reading the whole thing made me think that maybe the girl was just trying to make the girls think about what they are wearing and make some effort. I get soo sick of seeing young sorority girls in oversized sweats and too tight tops.

I actually appreciated her list. She seemed unapologetic at saying looking good does take some work, and being presentable does have guidelines, here are my preferences.

People should accept you 'just as you are' but we dont live in a PC world in the slightest, so giving bullet points on how to look your best in that type of environment Im sure is appreciated.

Plus I think she had some good tips (especially with eye makeup). Her list was overall 'chic corporate' to say the least.

Reading that list made me think that the author had to write it because most girls/women today just don't know any better. These are things that a mother should teach her daughter, but most nowadays don't.

I thought the list overall was practical...there were a couple of items on there that I personally thought ridiculous, but most of it seemed on the mark when one thinks about it.

This would be for all the parties when girls come to meet the sorority members. I thought it was pretty useful. If I remember correctly, when I was in college, and we had rush week activities, they just gave us a generic list, like "a dress" or "casual." Something like this would have been pretty helpful actually. And this is not telling you how you can and can not dress in general, to regular parties or to class or anything.

I think a lot of people think sororities are like they are in the movies. Some may have been, but mine was just a bunch of girls away from home looking for friendship.

Well, I must confess, I didn't read the whole 7 pages. Interesting comments from the ladies.
On a more distrurbing note, I shudder to think of Feraud as a punk rocker. lol

This was in the Huffington Post this morning. My first reaction was that it must be some sort of silly internet hoax, but from the various comments, I guess it's not. I can only say I'm glad I was never a college girl trying to make it with my peer group. Carrrrazy!

I wonder how many lounge members would love to write their own dress code and apply it to the world at large. Judging from the threads and posts I have seen, quite a few, and it would be just as strict and detailed.

Stretch denim is still just tight jeans.... denim leggings are leggings (aka mostly lycra) that looks like jeans in a trompe l'oeil way.

I was concerned about the prohibition on cork soled shoes but it looks like that's just about it being winter and thus no summer shoes, which I can live with. Banning espadrilles in summer would be madness, though, and I would lead a revolt through the streets.

Her taste isn't quite mine but its not actually a terrible set of guidelines. It even largely works, adjusted only slightly, for vintage style. It's not a very trend-oriented look.

I'm not sure where the accusation of vapidity is coming from - on the Lounge? Where we take hats very very seriously? lol

Now I'm entertaining myself by making up my own dress-code. Don't worry, its entirely hypothetical. I could swear I've seen the same "such-and-such should NEVER be allowed" on FL any number of times, anyway. More vapidity, I guess. ;)

Hats
Yes: Flat caps, eight panel caps, regular or stingy fedoras, in your choice of gray, light gray, dark gray, or black. Top hats only if authorized by your local representative.
No: Absolutely no straw boaters or Panamas 'till Memorial Day, fellows, and no campaign hats at any time unless you are Smokey Bear.
