Underwater adhesive tape?

Is there a semipermanent -- that is, removable -- adhesive tape that maintains its adhesion under water? Or is there a tape used in surgery or medicine that maintains adhesion while being impervious to water or perspiration?

Yes- maybe, if you could be a tad more specific about the application, people who are knowledgable
could offer you a more useful solution- there are so many "adhesive tape" products on the market and
perhaps other solutions to your problem.

3M's Performance Plus Duct Tape (#8979N/nuclear) can, apparently, hold for months, underwater.
I always use it when my reactor core cooler pipework springs a leak.

Filament reinforced tapes can be useful but it really depends on the adhesive AND the backing material-
as we're all painfully aware, "edge seepage" is the weak link in non application-specific adhesive tape products,
under a long-term submerged scenario.
I would make a call to 3M, or similar supplier and talk about your specific requirements, or maybe your local,
friendly nuclear power plant could tell you what they use for running repairs.

I expect the application is something to do with repairing, or preserving something from the Golden Era... right?
You just forgot to mention what it was.

Of course, this is probably a question best suited for "The Powder Room".

Will it hold underwater?

If the tape is applied to a dry surface and has bonded well, it will hold underwater for a time because the backing is waterproof. However, adhesive is exposed to water at the tape edge. Over time, water will seep in at the edge and cause the tape to let loose. Because the water has compromised the integrity of the tape, you may also see adhesive transfer on removal.

Many duct tape and aluminum tape, type adhesives will "lose their stick",
or suffer separation of adhesive and backing when exposed to water.
Will not stick forever.

Nods...we really need to have specifics on all this...

he mentioned sweat resistance..which is why I lean toward medical tape of some sort...

but we need to know if water can seep into the tape, as long as it stays stuck, or are we talking complete water barrier, is the item -immersed- or just gotten wet...

way way too many variables without more info here.

I heard the medical/sweat thing but I imagined (how long before he gets back to this thread and tells us..?) it was just broadening the approach and that his usage was not going to be a medical one. I am thinking that medical tape is going to be light-duty.

Let's keep guessing.
