I picked this up a couple of weeks ago at Macy's. It's from their "American Rag" private label. It's nice and warm..the body is lined with fur, the outside is like a washed canvas. It was only around $60.
Since I'm not up on my military gear, I was wondering...is this style based on a real Navy coat?

That's a great looking jacket. Very similar to my dad's from WWII. Price is very good for this kind of jacket.

By the way, where is Palookaville? Did they have any others in that size? I can't find them online.

I'm actually in NY!
You probably won't be able to find one of these. They were in stores before the holidays. If you have any Macy's nearby, check the clearance racks!

Yeah, I checked around, and nobody has heard of it.

I notice that yours is in my size, so let me know if you ever get tired of it.;)

I went to my local Macy's this past friday (2-6-09) and checked out their
clearance racks, in the hopes of possibly finding one of these cool jackets.

Before I went there, I did check the internet, and although I could find the
American Rag name sold at Macy's, none of the internet sites had the jackets
on them. Not even in any clearance sections. So these were probably taken
off the websites at the start of 2009.

Anyway, I thought I would give my local Macy's a once over anyway.

They had alot of jackets on sale for 75 percent off, but I didn't see any
American Rag stuff. I didn't think it would be there, but I was in the area,
so I thought what-the-hell.

I asked three "sales associates" and one "manager" about the American
Rag brand of clothes, and if perhaps I missed a rack of clearance items.

All four of these highly trained individuals had absolutely NO idea what
American Rag was, and none of them had any clue whether or not Macy's
even sold anything by that name!!

All four of them said I must have had a different store in mind, and that
even though I pointed out a rack of young mens shirts hanging right next
to them that had the "American Rag" tags on them, they still did not believe me
that it exsisted at Macy's.

So, unless you find one on e-bay, forget about ever having anyone in an
actual store help you out.

They must hire monkeys who only know how to push register keys to make
the shiney, blinky scanners work. Otherwise, forget about any actual help
finding one of these jackets now.

Ugh....I work at Macy's (not the one you were at, but still). Some stores hire "bodies" to fill in shifts...retail is a tough racket!
The American Rag jackets were, from what I've seen, very limited. My store (which is a very large store) only recieved probably around 6 in mid-December and sold quick. It could be that the goons you were speaking to got hired after they were already sold out, or that location never got them at all.
They wouldn't be on clearance yet ( and definitely not 75% off), probably just a regular sale.

I can see if they didn't know about the jackets. But to not know about the
American Rag line of clothing, when I showed it to them on a rack not 5 feet
away from where we were standing talking about it, and then to deny its sold
at the store, is just plain old stupid.

And to top it off, they look at me like I have two heads or something for
bringing it up.

Too bad they were not like you at your store. At least then, even when
we couldn't find them, it would have been a nice try.

I liked shopping better when people worked on commision. Then, you got
helpful people because they NEEDED the customers.

Now, whether they helped me or not, they were going to make the same
amount of money, so what did they care?

I was luckily able to get my hands on one of these cool jackets, and am very happy with it. Very close to the original in many ways. I have yet to dig out the old mans for a comparison, but my memory of it says this is pretty close.

No, it isn't a $375 Buzz Rickson, but for the money, it can't be beat. But, they don't claim for it to be an copy of the original either.

It is based on what we used to call a Foul Weather Jacket. Ours didn't have a fleece collar or have U.S.N. on the front. They were usually stenciled with the name of the ship or command on the back. For example:
U.S.S. Kamehameha
SSBN 642

The funniest thing

happened a moment ago. One of the cleaning crew walked in for his shift wearing a different manufacturer's version of this jacket. It was from Old Navy, go figure. :p It reminded me that our foul weather jackets also had a left breast flap pocket, with snap.

Is this what you are referring to as a Foul Weather Jacket?

I believe Polo/RL have trafficked in this ilk as well.

Really, what haven't they knocked off?

True but the Ralph Lauren repro stuff I've owned or seen of theirs is often very impressive, IMHO.
