Tying an Ascot Without it Choking You?

After following several tutorials on how to tie an ascot without it getting loose (most of which say to do a four-in-hand knot), I have noticed that the ascot still falls, but instead of just falling, the knot also chokes you by getting stuck between your shirt and your neck. How do you stop this from happening? Do you simply tie the ascot without the knot, and just tighten it now and then?

I've always done a half or double-windsor and then just not bothered with the final step.

Do you mean what I would call a cravat? If so it's just a simple right over left action, half a reef knot in other words.

Yep, I mean what you would call a cravat.

Then all you need is a half hitch as I described, fluff it up a bit and wear with panache.
