Two Naptha Baths-Hat Still Wreaks Of Cigarette Smoke

My grey fedora smelled worse than smoke more like cigarette tar. The first time I did the naptha sealed bucket method for three hours. When I was done I ran the used naptha through a coffee filter. It was dry after sitting overnight but still smelled awful. This time it was a overnight soak. In the morning I put the hat in another bucket and poured the naptha over it. Then moved back to the other bucket and poured the naptha over it again. I repeated this four or five times. It has now dried and is looking better but stil smells. Since I reused the naptha is it possible that the liquid although filtered and clear has retained the smokey funk. :( What can I try next? Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated.

You might try to search the Lounge for "removing cigarette order". I'm sure there are a number of threads on the subject. The one that I have heard of is this one. Put the hat in a box with crumbled up newspapers. Let the hat stay in the box for a week and the newspaper absorbs the oder.

Yes I checked before posting. I may have missed a thread or two. Baking soda and the hat in a sealed bag was discussed. It would appear these suggestions were offered as a, "try this first". I'm afraid if two naptha baths doesn't remove the smell then baking soda won't touch it. That said, I am willing to give it a try. The felt is dry to the touch. It was set out to dry Sunday so perhaps it may be off-gassing still.

I had a hat come from a heavy pipe smoker. It wreaked. Did the newspaper trick & no more pipe smoke smell.
Also, a good dousing with talcum powder, work it in good, brush it off. Talc will take particles with it too...HTH
