1939-40 saw World's Fairs on both coasts. The Golden Gate Exposition doesn't seem to get the recognition today of the '39 New York World's Fair, but it was a first class World's Fair in its own right...and it was an equally big deal back then.

I've known about the Golden Gate Exposition since I was a kid because I had an excellent View-Master reel depicting the Fair at night.

I love memorabilia from the 1933 Worlds Fair in Chicago and the 1939 Worlds Fair in New York. I don't have any from the 1939 Worlds Fair on the west coast.

I am still so curious though as to why this is so overlooked then the other Worlds Fairs though? or is it.
I wonder if there is a whole group of collectors of this fair I don't know about. As a dealer since 1996 I have never heard of it. Why I love this business as I am always finding out new info. Keeps me going. :D

How timely. I cannot believe this. Must be fate. I had never ever heard of this Fair and now they are celebrating it till September 21st. with a special exhibit. Someone absolutely has to attend this and give us some photos. Seriously. (this all started with an old license plate mention here.

This library is jammed pack full of info about the Fair it looks like if someone is nearby.

Rupert Holmes's excellent mystery SWING takes places on Treasure Island. The book includes a map of the place and incorporates how the place was built.

I think the main reason the Golden Gate fair is doomed to be the Other 1939 Fair is that the San Franciscans didn't have Grover Whalen as their front man. Whalen and his army of publicity men were able to make the New York fair *the* event of the year, while the general feeling at the time was "Oh yeah, and there's also a fair in San Francisco if you can get way out there."
