Tips on fixing double breasted suit inside buttons

So one of the inside buttons on my double breasted suit unraveled and fell out. I have the button luckily and still have replacements that came with this 25 year old suit. I want to try and sew it back on myself. Any tips to gauging the proper distance to allow for material thickness and any tips for how to create the thick wrapped look that it was originally stitched on with? Thanks!

Put the jacket on then button it up, check your appearance in front of a mirror. now carefully position the overlapped part of the jacket so that it's comfortable on and doesn't look like it's in any way askew. You might need some help here. Fasten the underside with a couple of large safety pins. Then, reach inside, and using tailor's chalk, (you can get it in the form of a pencil,) push the chalk through the button hole and mark the point on the jacket where the button is to go. This may result in a re-positioning of the button, if you don't like that then simply sew it back on in it's original position.

To sew a jacket button back on and to allow for the extra material thickness, all you do is create a shank, that's to say a gap between the button and the jacket. And to do that all you have to do is sew the button on using a matchstick/toothpick/sewing machine needle over the button. Sew over the matchstick then when finished, withdraw the matchstick, then wind a long length of thread around the sewn button, between button and the jacket.
