thinking of dyeing some boots

I own the Allen Edmonds Dalton in Walnut & bourbon. I really like them. I prefer boots to shoes so I was thinking of picking up a pair in walnut & dyeing them black.

Thoughts? Comments?

Would you just cover all the leather with a black dye? If so, just take your time, do a lot of prep on them before using any dye. I have some some dress boots that look nice black, so why not?

If you have not used the liquid dye before on a pair of boots or shoes, I would suggest so very much you do it in stages. There are actual cleaners, dye prep, and strippers. You should spend the money for all those products and use them. Use the stripper first, the cleaners second, then wash the leather lightly with saddle soap, let them dry off and when they are really dry, use a clean clothe and rub all over the leather, then use the prep. If you do all these things, the leather will really take all the dye in much better and you will result in such a nice finish. The black liquid dye by Fiebings is in my opinion the best dye to use for black. They also make the deglazer/stripper and the cleaner and the dye prep. One nice thing about the black dye, you will not need to use a "clear top coat" on that dye. When the dye is set and a few days later fully cured, you can just use black shoe cream and then black wax polish and you are good to go. I would also think it would be good for the leather if after about a week of putting the dye on the boots, apply some leather conditioner on the inside of the boots to let it soak in the leather from the "back side" of it instead of just doing an application on the outside. You want to leave the outside for just shoe cream and polish wax for some time so you do not "pull" the dye back out.
