The William Gottlieb Collection

For those of you who aren't aware, the plum selections of William Gottlieb's photographs are available for download from the Library Of Congress. They are top quality scans, and if I had a better printer, I would have them gracing my living space.

Gottlieb was one of the most important photographers of the swing and jazz era, and four of his portraits were the basis of the Jazz Artist Postage stamps that you probably recognize:

One of his office parties - with James P. Johnson and Freddie Moore.

I love this image of 52st Street in 1948...

On one night you could see Art Tatum, Erroll Garner and Oscar Pettiford play in different clubs!

what a time!
