This is why I'm glad every day that I work with a group of winners. Losers--especially women--will tear you down.

Having worked in IT for 13 years, I could have a skewed opinion of the above, since I mostly work with men. For a number of years, I ONLY worked with men.

However, having owned 3 businesses, I find that the individual and their ethics are more telling.

I've worked with young men: one who came straight out of the military, and was punctual, polite, on time and did his job perfectly. Another thought our business was a one-hour rental hotel.

I've worked with older men: one whom was punctual, polite and efficient; he was paying for both kid's college education and supporting his wife. Another thought company email was to pick up single women behind his wife's back and forge signatures on corporate documents.

I've hired veterans, single parents, doubly-disabled individuals (yes, you read that right), college graduates, persons with doctorates and persons with no certification. I've hired friends, family and persons who became friends.

In my opinion, it doesn't really matter which gender the person is. What matters is their ethics, their attitude and their ability to do the job. Or not. These things usually carry over to the dicussion above.

Apparently it's working, too. Let her know it is and you're done. I'll say it again: Always strive to rise above your detractors. That, in the end, is always the best revenge.

A thought about the rude women thing.... I know none of the chaps I work with (what - either of them? lol ) would be culturally comfortable passing comment on a woman's appearance. Sexual harrassment being the ever-present spectre it is in the public sector line of work.

But it's acceptable for a woman to comment on another woman's appearance... and no questions asked about the motivation.
(I have to admit I was quite upset about those comments on Monday :( )

The examples you give are of highly unprofessional and unethical behavior. But they don't involve tearing down coworkers (as far as I can discern).

Sounds like this gal is a candidate for "How Not to Dress", or one of those other "Makeover" programs. Do other people think she dresses like a schlub? Maybe you could give her a new lease on life this way.
On the other hand, she may be one of those people who militantly do NOT want to be happy, and will turn any attempt you make to be nice to them against you. Those types you just have to stay away from.

Uh, it isn't working. I posted because it was strange to me not because this woman was getting under my skin or anything. Believe me, far from it. I mean, I'm fully aware of who I am and what I have to offer. Today again, she was in sweatshirt and jeans, hair pulled back in a sort of bun and again I smiled and waved, with a giant smile as she crammed chicken into her mouth, sitting at the front desk in the main office no less.

As a person who has been through a lot...

I wouldn't automatically assume that she is really jealous or insecure. I do think however, that she disapproves of you for whatever reason. Probably unfounded, or just because you dress well and differently than others. Whatever her motivation is I would be really careful around her, especially if she has any power.

Taking the high ground is probably a good idea. Still, I would watch my back if I were you. Work politics can get very nasty.

I've had all kinds of problems with a nasty female co-worker. I don't want to go into it here in too much detail, but I had to get HR involved and they still sided with her even though the tramp has been written up multiple times for wildly inappropriate things that she should have been fired for. The only thing now is that she is no longer allowed to use 4-letter words and names to my face.

Good luck and don't let it get as far as my situation.

Ah, Tourbillion, how horrible. :(

Technically, I work within the school but not for the school. I work for an organization that provides services to adolescents so we are school based. She isn't in a position of power over or in relation to me.

I thought about the not liking me thing but, I'm really sweet (honestly I am :D ) plus, I'm never around her, she doesn't know me to not like me.

Aww! I know you are, but you can dislike someone just because they exist, they don't have to be mean, or annoying, or anything really. If you don't like someone it is easy to find something about them that you can pick on, even their being well dressed.
