I just love it. If it's not already, I'd have it with a belted back. Probably made from a good hard wearing Irish Linen. Just a beauty of a piece!

Yes, this is one of the few movies I can think of where the men's costumes were more interesting than the women's. Naomi Watts had lovely outfits, to be sure, but she was pretty much the only woman in the film (who wasn't a nun!) so spotlight in this movie was on the men's outfits.

I'd bet that coat has a belt back too--wish there was a picture somewhere but I've not been able to find one.

what a film

Have to say I enjoyed it in the theatre and then enough to buy the DVD.
Love the writing of Maugham.
Slowly buying all his works in first edition
for some reason, as first editions go they are not that expensive.
The film has such great clothing for males from the formal black tie of Britain to the khaki and sporting clothing of China.
Did love the "belt back" jacket yes would say is made of Irish lien.
Just the think for a garden party or tea on the shores of Lake Tahoe.
The whole small boating brides-head thing what fun but alas the western rivers do not lend them selfs to that kind of a relaxing afternoon
The film is a great place for one to start when developing ones own look.

If I could figure out how to post attach photos if I could I would . I use a Mac that might have some thing to do with my problem. Am ideas out there in the lounge?
But back to books
I have just bought a great copy of The Razors Edge ( my favorit book by the author)
1st edition US printing 1943
now the fun is what is on the top page
"This book has not been condensed. Its bulk is less because goverment regulations prohibit use of heaver paper. "
This wonderful book cost me $15.00
A local used-vinatge book store keeps their eyes out for me. If they find any first by Maugham or T.E Lawrence then the next time I am in I leave with an other first to be read and enjoyed.

I saw the new version a couple of weeks ago, and enjoyed it very much. What I liked best was the way it tells the truth about love. True love, as Kitty and Walter realize by the end, is self-sacrificial, not self-seeking. Far too many people today marry as an act of self-expression, or to find personal fulfillment, or to have their own needs met. That's fine as far as it goes, but if that's the only basis for marriage--or any relationship--it's going to be a disappointing, frustrating, ultimately love-less endeavour. I thought the movie did a fabulous job of portraying that accurately.

Great point. I wonder how many people marry because of infatuation (as Walter did) or out of parental (or peer) pressure, as Kitty did.
