I just finished Leigh Montville's new biography of Mysterious Montague, a shadowy figure from 1930s Los Angeles who hustled Hollywood stars on the golf course, became a mythical figure, was tried for an armed robbery committed years earlier in the Adirondacks, and outlived his fame in rather tragic style. It really is a terrific peek into 1930s LA. Characters include Oliver "Babe" Hardy, Johnny Weismuller, Bing and Grantland Rice.

I just read an article about him in Smithsonian Magazine. What a fascinating character, eh? I loved the story about the golf bet with Bing Crosby.
