Precisely. I can go down here to the pet store and buy a parrot and teach to say HIPPIE HIPPIE HIPPIE, but that parrot will never understand a complex social issue.

DD's challenge was simply that we ought to be able to discuss this without constantly throwing HIPPIE/WOODSTOCK/etc. out on the ground as a way of getting around using more, shall we say, political language. I endorse that challenge, and I *am* speaking as a Bartender when I say that. And if we can't discuss it without politics -- which we've been able to do for nearly six thousand posts, after all -- then maybe it's time to close this thread.

I see it that Deco wants all discussion about 'hippies' shut down...and any reference to many of their possible principles seeping into society..well...discontinued...while Dennis is still trying to make his points about what he feels has led to 'The general decline'.

HD...I think she wants "hippie bashing" stopped for a finite period of time. Not all discussion about hippies. And not forever. At least that's how I read her post. I'm guessing that by hippie bashing, she means referring to them as "stinking" or "dirty" or evaporating them with cartoon laser beams or blaming them for the demise of western civilization or whatever.

But that's just my guess.

Cliff notes: I'm looking for some civility and respect between members (which can require compromise). And I'm hoping that gleefully trashing groups of real human people (yes, despite the rhetoric otherwise) in the ruse of making some profound point about society is not actually the cultural norm here.

I'm wondering how saying scum, rat infested, scabby, worthless, stinky, flea ridden etc etc on a daily basis is bringing rational, intelligent anything to an argument. I wondering how using hippie icons to zap is bringing anything to a debate. I'm wondering why I see reference to hippies so very much through-out a 20-50s forum, no matter what the thread. And I'm wondering who is actually fooled here that Hippie is not code for liberal. Cause I want to shake their hand and wish them luck.

Eh…I’ve looked through some of the other threads and have seen very little mention of hippies to be honest. Maybe I’m not hanging out in the right places, I don’t know.

If you were brave enough to go back through this thread to my first statement about this, I acknowledged my own problems with hippie culture and its aftereffects. If the 60s movement was referenced without all the scum sucking rhetoric, like adult people trying to share a pov and not just grind an axe, super dandy.

I don't even call myself a liberal, because I don't have all the necessary boxes ticked there. So this is not a "side" issue for me. I don't like bullying (even if the people aren't in front of you, but really you shouldn't assume that, even here) and I don't like broad hyperbolic scapegoating. And I've seen too much here. And I thought we could voluntarily step back from it for a short time and breath the fresh air.
