I grew up with one of these down the street from me. For some reason I just remembered it, so I went to their website.

"No item over one dollar."

Here is a real nifty timeline of their history.

Alas, for some reason the photo section is not working.

At one point, I'm sure that dollar stores were great. Now, they're just outlets for the absolute worst, always Chinese-made, trash. I was in one with my wife, a pre-school teacher, looking for end-of-the-year gifts for her students. We quickly left when I spotted fleas in the "fur" of the stuffed animals. :rage:

Dollar General is everything a dollar? Wow. The one in my town (a block from where I sit) is a regular discounter. Stuff's cheap (it's the place to get shampoo and such), but there's little under a buck.
It's in the old Woolworth's. You can see where the lunch counter used to be. :)

Edit to add: And the place is filthy.

Sadly, that is so true. We have a Fred's Dollar and a Dollar General about 6 miles from our town and they are just filled with imported junk. I do buy my canning supplies there but that is it.

"No item over one dollar." People, that was their old slogan! At both Dollar General and Family Dollar here, as well as in Texas and in Florida, they charge more than a dollar on most items. Now, at Dollar Tree everything is a dollar, sometimes 2 for a dollar, and I've been told by employees the most common question from customers is "How much is this?" They have flypaper, Pear's soap, good new books cheap, and Aziza red lipstick and nail polish packaged together and other stuff I can't find anywhere else.
I get some of the Spanish coffee I like from one of the Dollar Generals when I'm in Florida and my mom buys bleach for her house's water system there, as well as other neccessities.
In Texas I needed some bedroom slippers because the carpeting in hubby's apartment was full of slimy bugs and I think it was Family Dollar that came to the rescue that time, for about 2 bucks a pair.
I'd like to see an old Woolworth's lunch counter again.

I used to love Woolworths. I detest dollar stores and try my best to not support them. I had never heard of Dollar General till about 5 years ago or Family Dollar.

When I was first starting out in the big world called adulthood, I got EVERYTHING from Dollar General. Maybe its location or management but the ones I have been in were pretty clean. Nothing outside of what you would see at Wal-mart ( if thats really saying much lol )

We have a Dollar store, but it isn't the same name. Lots of stuff for a buck.
I remember Woolworth's. They had a lunch counter, and I remember as a young kid, we used to think it was a tacky place to go...like we would joke with our peers about taking a girl to "Woolworth's" lunch counter. Connotation was you were a cheapskate. Now, I wish the place was back..there are almost no counters around these days.

And Woolworth's..the had parakeets and fish. While mom was shopping, us boys would go to the toy section, and then go see the pets. Wow. Those days are long gone!

I remember Woolworth's lunch counter and the pet section too. We have The Dollor Tree stores out here nothing is over a dollor, it is pretty much imports too and there is not too bad a selection of various foods considering they are all a dollor. I shopped at the Dollar General and the Family Dollar when I lived in Texas - it was such a small town and the shopping was real limited, there was one grocery store in town and other than that there was Walmart 30 miles away.

The dollar store I go to is Dollar Tree. I found some great stuff there such as accessories for my Ipod nano. Once the 4th generation came out all the accessories for the 3rd generation nano ended up there. They also have good birthday and holiday items.
