I was talking to a friend of mine, who is an Orthopedic Surgeon, about my interest in vintage fedoras, and the difficulty in finding one in my size (7 ¬?). He suggested that it would be possible to remove bone from the occipital and temporal surfaces of my skull, making me a 7 ¬º. Similarly, bone inserts could be added to increase a skull's hat size.

He did point out that his would probably only work one size up or down. Anything larger would leave a visible “step” above the ears.

Hmmm ... let's see here. Vintage lids in sizes smaller than most of us moderns wear do seem considerably more plentiful, and cheaper. And it's been said of my head that it makes a darn fine hat rack, if not much else, so ...
Now it just a matter of convincing the insurance company to pay for it.

This "surgeon" can't possibly be serious...removing bone from someone's skull so that they can wear a hat??? And the medical profession wonders why medical malpractice insurance rates are so high and blame lawyers for lawsuits. :eusa_doh:

You know, I heard tell that there was once a surgeon named "Frankenstien" who could just replace your entire head...

I think an adjustable skull would be a bit better. Say from 6 5/8 to 7 5/8...

"wrong size, no problem. Let me get out my allen wrench and adjust my self...";)

Ridiculous! I take this as tounge-in-cheek.;) If anyone was dumb enough to seriously consider this...and some nit whit doctor was unethical enough to actually do it..remember this all important fact: ALL hats shrink to some degree in storage and from use, exposure to the elements, etc. So after taking your fine hat off the closet shelf for the start of a new season, you'd better call 'ol Doc again and shave off some more bone!

I believe that is why hatters exist and such a tool as a "hat stretcher" is readily availablelol

Speaking for myself as a 7 1/2, and the abominable stress induced by fruitlessly searching on OFAS, you could probably prove medical necessity.

Make head smaller??

You might ask him if he could throw in a lobotomy while he's at it. I bet you could get a real good price.

There've been loads of stories about doctors who'll do crazy surgeries because someone's willing to pay the bill. There was a woman whose husband was a multimillionaire (I know it's not right, but the name was like Wildenburg) and she'd gone through a million or more on dozens of plastic and facial reconstructive surgeries to make her face look like a cat because she loved her kitties and wanted to look like them. The results were scary at the point I saw some photos 8-10 years ago and she had more work scheduled.

Jocelyn Wildenstein. Yes, this is a real photo of her and it should make you scared.
