In some states they are considered "hazardous materials" making them harder to find because of "regulations." (This is the vague answer I've gotten from people around here. There's also less demand for them too, so that doesn't help stores to stock them.) They are available through Amazon.

There was a discussion of this somewhere earlier, but strike anywhere matches contain white phosphorus, which is not only considered hazardous, it's used to make crystal meth, so a lot of places decline to carry them. But they're out there, you just may have to look around.

That and you can supposedly use the match heads to make pipe bombs.
It wouldn't surprise me given the meth epidemic that stores weren't carrying them. In NYS, pseudoephedrine is regulated because of meth (it's a decongestant).

I tried to once buy a daytime version and nighttime version of the same thing, because, well, I think you can figure it out. The damned machine wouldn't let me.
I was told by a pharmacist that one of the things I have to sign each time I purchase was that the pharmacist was actually giving me a product that had pseudophedrine in it. Apparently some pharmacist crooks were actually giving customers things that didn't have pseudophedrine in them and then keeping the pseudophedrine product for themselves (and "buying" the product that didn't have it in it so they could secretly haul away packets and packets of the stuff). They were basically stockpiling the stuff using this "switching" tactic and then either cooking it themselves or selling it on the black market. I often wonder who these people were who didn't read the packages too carefully, but I can see it happening to someone who was really sick and not paying attention or someone who had poor vision, etc. You tend to trust the pharmacist.

I'm frankly surprised. I had no idea it was difficult to find strike-anywhere matches anywhere. I find it harder to procure footwear with a leather sole, so that I can strike the match against the bottom of my shoe. I love doing that.

I think those types of Matches can be found at some places that normally would sell building supplies, like Lowes or Home Depot? I make mention of this as a few years ago when my Husband and I went up North to our place there, we picked up some of those type of Matches for lighting the fireplace. Not sure the price of them, and not really sure they still carry them, but worth checking into if you want to buy them.
A rumor of which I cannot confirm also is that the normal matches we use, the striker strip has some trace of Magnesium Sulfate in it to help ignite the match head. It may be also the match head itself has some sort of Sulfate as when you light a match up, you can smell a Sulphide smell to it. One really good use of that type of match (a book of matches) is to keep several in your bathroom. Works as an "neutralizer" for when anyone has had one too many chili peppers in their diet! LOL!

An old trick was to cut off match heads from book matches and plant one with each pepper plant because of the sulfur. Don't know if it worked or not, but I can remember doing it as a kid.
