I have seen several hats on the forum over the year or so I have belonged identified as Western Hybrids...I like the idea and the term...living in Florida and working in California and having a home in Chihuahua, I am probably a Western Hybrid myself.....Would you please share your thoughts on what is a Western hybrid by your definition and show us some samples? I am having Art make me a hat and I think that is what I have asked him for....Let me also post several of my hats that I think may be examples.....Is it the crown, the brim, the band or ribbon? What do you all think? I hesitate to post someone else's pictures, so please share your thoughts.

I wouldn't go with Western Hybrid but with what I grew knowing as a Country style hat = flat, wider brim with a thinnish ribbon. City hats are your more traditional wider ribbon "dress" hats but Country hats are the Open Road, Stratoliner & even Playboy style hats. My grandfather was a gentleman farmer/rancher & wore Open Roads daily but donned a wider ribbon, shorter brim hat for Sunday Go-To-Meeting, weddings, funerals, etc.

Your first hat reminds of a Playboy & your second reminds me of an Open Road.
My Buckaroo Hatters custom, close to a Playboy but with an OR bow & bound edge...

My VS Wanderer, basically a Playboy with a bound edge just like a Stetson Wanderer

I do have some western converstions = altered to fedora crease & cut down the brims. The closely resemble Outback style hats to me.

To me, a western hybrid had would have a larger brim than a fedora. It would also have a thinner ribbon or maybe a leather band instead. It is a hat that is less dressy than a fedora. Color might also be a factor on the perception of a westernish hat. Tans, browns, and blacks are seen more in western hats than other colors.

The hat, by itself, in your first photo does not look western at all. I could see it going well with a traditional suit. But the whole ensemble with the boots is definitely western hybrid.

Unfortunately, I do not have any photos of western hybrid hats other than the ubiquitous Open Road.

Super Fedoras

I love them and I wear them a lot.

Around here, the few "hat guys" call them Super Fedoras.

You can wear them with a sports coat or jeans, you don't have to worry about tossing them under your chair at a restaurant or meeting, and they keep coming back for more.

I love my vintage dress fedoras a lot, but Super Fedoras are great for every day wear.

Outside of dowsing one in motor oil and setting it on fire, there's not much that's going to ruin your day.

Art calls this a crossover. I like it because it has more of a casual feel then a fedora. More like a Cavalry hat then a Cowboy hat. When I look at it I think John Wayne meets Humphrey Bogart.

great example Johnny

Whether it's a cross over,a conversion, a super fedora, John Wayne meets Humphrey Bogart is right, and that is a great one, Johnny!

They are perfect for every day work!

I think I have two hats that would fall into this category. One is my Open Road-ish Champ.

The other that might qualify is my brown Royalist with a 2 5/8" brim.

The wide, flat-ish brims and thinner ribbons seem to do it. (My wide-brimmed Stetson Flagship also gets positive comments around here.)

Open roads fit

I have a great old Open Road, with the crown in a "gus" bash that certainly fills this bill.

Teamed with a cord or tweed sports coat it's great for any but the dressiest events, but I've also worn it on mission trips to Honduras — where, by the way, it was a big hit. I had several patrons ask where they could get one!

And, again, you don't have to be so careful about where you put it on the airplane ... just don't miss place it in the airport or you won't get it back.

This came to me with a squared off cattleman with kicks fore and aft. '50s heavyweight western felt. Tough as nails. Took a lot to clean it up and reshape it so that it looked like this.

These are all great hats....Keep em coming

I am sitting in the Houston airport with my trust hat box by my side and just as I am typing this a young man with a great bowler just walked by. Not that isn't something you see every day!

Keep those hybrids/crossovers coming......

Are you at Bush or Hobby?
The last time I was in Hobby I saw a young soldier wearing a cavalry hat.
Let me tell you he looked more than cool.
