Kicking the habit of nail biting!

About a month or so back, I bought a light brownish nail color to help me keep from biting my fingernails, and now they have grown so much that I am regurarly painting them different colors.

I don't care for the way my nails look in red polish when they are short and stubby, so the lighter color helped me grow them out a bit, so now they look lovely in differing shades of red :) I have even been getting compliments on them :D

No matter what dreadful shoes i might be wearing for work or whatever...I like having my toenails a nice color.....used to be black, these days it's red.

My toenails are never a normal color. Red would be approaching boring for me - right now they are turquoise with silver glitter. Last summer's Packard meet they were Packard blue. I did alternating red and green for Christmas and red and silver with one big toe blue with silver stars for the 4th of July. You get the idea.

I'm a librarian and an administrator, so there isn't a lot of room to dress creatively (although I go as crazy as I can) when I am in a suit and heels every day. Knowing that I have purple or green toes gives me something to smile about when I am sitting through yet another meeting.

The staff here know that my toes are likely to be something interesting. Last summer they had a betting pool about what color my toes would be on a given Monday. (I threw them off by painting every toe something different :D)

Dermatillomania

After seeing this term I read about it on the net. I had this pretty bad and picked the skin off side of my fingernails especially under stress. A few years back I was diagnosed with Graves (long story) and took a thyroid suppressant called PTU. (propylthiouracil) for only 6 months.
It stopped all of this biting completely for a time. Not sure what was in the PTU but as I see this biting in families I think it has something to do with genetics or something missing in diet or possibly a food allergy. (Definitely endocrine system related IMHO)
I so wish as it is 2011 more could be known about the human body.
I do also know it has always correlation to what time of the month it is.
---------
I am in remission from Graves, still have my thyroid, no longer on any medicine and do a special diet like they do in Europe and Japan for Graves.
-------------------
as for as secret weapons I have "hidden charms" as my mom used to say.

I aswell have Dermatillomania. My hands and feet are a mess, which I find absolutely terrible. I desire long red nails. I always hide my hands as much as I can. Now, in the new year, I am gonna do éverything about it to cure from this. It must work!

My secret weapons?
Hmm..red lipstick does the trick!

Some physical conditions include excessive skin picking in their symptomology. Often these physical disorders affect the liver or kidneys but the skin picking can also be a sign of anemia.
(found this in a search)

I also found it can be hormonal related which is what I definitely think. I constantly battle anemia and recently had to take a prescription for Vitamin D as I was very low.

My secret weapon is Vanilla perfume. A long long time ago, I read that men love it when women smell like baked goods, so I have several different brands, but all of them have that key ingredient. I'm also known to dab on a little bit of real Vanilla extract when I'm baking and hubby loves it, even though he doesn't know what it is :)

Although after reading this:
Darling, you just have to take my word for it and try it out :whistling :D
..and I recommend "Champagne" (Yvresse) for the legs etc..and use this phrase: " I've got Champagne on my bum, love."
lol

I might just buy some so that I can say it myself lol

As for my other secret weapons.... well, that's something I only share with my husband ;)

Red Toenails here to, never go without

Count me in. Very rarely do I paint them pink. Years ago tried purple but I'm so used to red that every time I looked down to purple toenails I freaked out

Good bras are important, in terms of comfort and looks, though I don't feel the need to show cleavage. Guys stare enough and need to be slapped enough as it is lol

My secret weapon is spraying perfume on the back of my neck at my hairline. The body heat wafts the scent and when I turn my head, I catch a whiff.

No red toenails or fingernails for me, pink all the way.

here!
I have manky toenails (a fungal infection passed on to me by an ex-boyfriend that nothing will shift) so I have to keep them painted red at all times as what's underneath is just vile! But when they're painted up they look pretty ok. My feet used to be one of my favourite things about myself as they are smallish and cute, but the fungal nail infection has rather scuppered that.

This is going to sound weird, but this makes me SO relieved to see that someone else has this issue! I bet we have exactly the same thing! Not sure how I got it, though both my parents have it I think so that's probably it, I just left it for ages (literally ages) and now all but one toenail are infected, and it's really quite bad :( it's not at all painful or anything - which is why I left it!- it just looks gross :( I always try and paint them but I'd still shy away from wearing open-toed shoes in summer, such a shame cause they go so well with a 50s look :(

I went to the docs and they told me I could either have my toenails removed, or take anti-fungal drugs for 6 months, which might not take effect for 3 months, might not cure it and could give me a liver disease...

:(

I know that fungal infections are hard to shift but have you tried Nailner? It's a bit on the pricey side (around €25 I think) but it works like a charm - it will take a while for your nail to grow out - even over a year but it will look so much better after treatment. Also if you need your nails to look good for an event there's always the false nails you can get for toes?

Thanks for your reply! Is that a natural formula? Cause I once bought an all-natural formula that did absolutely nothing. I should really emphasise that my toenails are really pretty badly infected, I'll spare you a description though :D

No - it's not a natural formula (www.nailner.com) - I only had one nail infection and my nail has vastly improved after using this stuff....sometimes you need to pull out the big guns!

I also found it can be hormonal related which is what I definitely think. I constantly battle anemia and recently had to take a prescription for Vitamin D as I was very low.

Years ago I read an early study (done in the 30s) that attributed nail biting to B-vitamin deficiency. (They looked at vitamins and followed children, nail biters had low b-levels and the low group they gave vitamin b shots to completely stopped or decreased their frequency after about a month of shots). They onyl followed around one or two classrooms, but the results were astounding.

I tried to do some modern research on this at the time (my mom was a nail biter as a child and was told it was because she was neurotic), but I couldn't find any current studies that had looked at this vitamin thing. If any of you bite your nails, it may be something to consider- it is easy to test from the Doctor's office and easy to fix with pills or shots. My mom became big on vitamins after some of them reversed/ stalled her arthritis, so all my life I have been a vitamin taker. I always thought after I read that study that maybe that is why I missed the nail biting- I had higher b-levels. (I'm not a doctor or anything close).
