Scary Deco Era Ballerina Art

Today in my vintage travels I was rummaging through some old stuff and saw an unframed painting of a ballerina with a sinister expression on her face and thought, "oh, just another scary ballerina from that time" because I have seen so many. Prints, original art, cards...why? Was this all the rage back in the day? Am I missing some cultural or historical connection?

Just curious.
