I reenact a Dutch socialist war correspondent in spain during the civil war (well going to do so anyway, not done yet) and love using vintage cameras.

Nice photo!
I have never used my FED camera, although the salesman says that he works perfectly. I am not an expert photographer, I only know to use my Canon digital camera.

The Spanish Civil War

Creemos que escenificar de esta manera la vida de los soldados de la Guerra Civil es una herramienta sumamente útil para suscitar el interés por el conocimiento de ese periodo, que tanto ha marcado la historia de nuestro país.

We hope that dramatizing the life of (Spanish) Civil War soldiers in this way can be a very useful tool to arouse interest in the knowledge of this period of history which has so strongly marked the history of our country.

“¡Ay, Carmela!” carece de toda intencionalidad política y no es el cauce para la expresión de ninguna ideología, posición moral o creencia religiosa.

Ay Carmel has no political leanings and is not the means to express any ideology, moral position or religious belief.

Sounds like a whole lot of fun. But I am surprised you can achieve these objectives in a country of such deep historical passions.

Incidentally I have a Spanish friend who arrived in Australia as a young fellow and still tells the story of his family member who has a copy of his own death warrant issued in the Civil War but not executed ....so to speak!

Really, we have had some problems but we have been able to reunite reenactors of both sides, each one with its ideology. It is certain that in Spain the ideological passions are marked, but in ¬°Ay, Carmela! we never spoke of policy and we respected all the people although we reject the ideas of some. We know that, in other way, it's impossible to make a reenactment that not finish in a true battle!

Crossover

At the risk of taking the thread into movieland, I saw Pan's Labyrinth, or El Laberinto del fauno, and apart from the brilliance of it all, was quite interested in the historical background of the continuation of the resistance by the republicans and incursions from France during WW2. Apparently diehard guerillas were still a problem right into the 50's.

I was lucky to be a friend of Emilio Alvarez, a.k.a. "Pinocho", one of the commanders of the Spanish guerrillas who entered Spain from France, in the so-called invasion of the Ar?°n valley, which is the episode to which the movie "El laberinto del fauno" refers, although in a very little realistic way. The truth is that the attempt of invasion was a disaster for the guerrillas, the majority of which had fought the Nazi in the french "maquis". If the Allied forces had helped the antifascist Spanish, the history of Spain might have changed.

who pays?

I believe that all the "help" provided to the Republic by Stalin had to be paid for in gold, severely depleting the Spanish treasury and affecting the economy for decades, whereas all assistance to the Nationalists was given free by their ideological compatriots. France and England actually did nothing at all to assist against Germany and Italy's involvement, and one wonders how much that cost them later.

I agree completely. If France and Great Britain had understood truely, during the Thirties, the danger that supposed the fascism, perhaps World War II had been avoided or been very different. But only they were scared of the Comunism, and that blinded its eyes until it was too much behind schedule. The certain thing is that during the Spanish Civil War, the position of the western powers towards the Republic was deplorable and forced this one to look for the aid of the Soviet Union, in lieu of european democracies.

Miss Joeri, that group are doing Russians. They were at Abbey Field in Colchester last year and I know Malcom on the Left in the photo.

There is a group in the UK doing Spanish Civil War very well. They have been to Stowe Gardens but I can't think of their name offhand.
