Hi all,

Selling my Polar brand wool peacoat half-belt made by Ely & Walker in size 42.

Ely & Walker was started by Frank Ely and David Davis Walker in Missouri in 1879. Frank had already had his own firm, Ely, Janis & Co., prior to meeting David. David was originally from Bloomington, IL. The man was working as an office boy for Crow, McCreary & Co. before joining force with Frank.

Ely, Walker & Company was, in short, a raging and long-lived success. By the end of their first year, their business volume exceeded $2.5 million. In 1883, they incorporated under the name of Ely & Walker Dry Goods Company.

However, Frank passed away due to pneumonia in 1890, leaving David to be the sole owner of the company. Ambitous and determined, David carried on and continued to grow the company to a new height. By 1893, Ely & Walker had 65 salesman covering 17 states, including the areas in the “wild west,” in what was then known as Indian Territory. Both J.C. Penney and Sears Roebuck each purchased as much as one third of their inventories from E&W. E&W owned many factories by this time, producing goods under the E&W name.

In 1902, David felt ill and left the company for his sons, William H. Walker and George Herbert Walker. They continued to manage the company until David passed away in 1918. William resigned from the company early on due to a disagreement with his father so only George was the one who carried on the family's legacy. A little fun fact, George was the great grandfather of George W. Bush.

This is a beautiful wool peacoat. I normally wear a size 40 and this dude is one size too big for me, 42. The color combo is amazing and the wool is in great shape. There are a few repair spots from the previous owner, but they blended those in nicely. Everything else is original and intact.

Great piece from a historical company!
