The biggest favor you can do yourself is use a scotchguard-type product beforehand. Spray on and let dry a couple of coats. Afterwards, water (and stains) should bead up and roll off. This also makes them very easy to clean if you otherwise get a scuff.
I would never do this to leather shoes, but for fabric or even suede, it is essential
