Question About Aero's Brown FQHH

The other day, I mistakenly got a small piece of Scotch Tape stuck to my Brown FQHH Highwayman.
When I pulled it off, the brown color came right off of the leather, exposing the tan HH underneath.
Is this normal?

I can't answer for your being accident prone, but it's natural for the colouring to be scraped or rubbed off over time on the most exposed parts of the jacket — the same with tape. This is a natural product, excepting the tanning chemicals (!), so I guess there's many degrees of adhesion in individual skins and between different batches of hide.

Yes, it's normal. In fact, same thing happened to me and my Highwayman about three months ago. The area that was affected was rather small so I left it alone.

Thanks for the quick responses all.
I had a feeling this was the nature of a sprayed on dye.
As a matter of fact, I don't mind it at all.
I'd really like the jacket to look as "beat up" as it possibly can.
But I'll only do it through wearing, not artificial means.

The scotch tape gambit can now be added to the other methods of leather jacket wear-inducing, alongside taking a shower in it, getting your pets to sleep in it, bundling it up in heavy elastic and using it in ball games, etc... so we can avoid it. ;)

You forgot rolling around in a pile of bricks while wearing it.

It happened to me as well... we went to a bird-of-prey reserve down in Kent, and I stuck the ticket sticker to the front of my jacket.

When we came home, Mrs. Matei ripped the sticker off, and to my surprise it took a thumbprint size area of stain with it! I don't worry too much, as the jacket surface shows minor scuffs and scratches fairly easily. It is just the very surface, and I should have it broken in well enough that similar marks of wear will be all over.

leather and adhesives

Leather doesn't like adhesives, thats for sure. I've not had a horsehide jacket before. I wonder if the dying and pigment process has something to do with colorfastness. The aero HH seems to develop wonderful aged patina rather quickly from all the pics here of Aero horsehide material. Do they make a dyed through (drum dyed) version of horsehide that won't lose color or bleed off onto surrounding materials? I'm comparing to Lost Worlds HH leather which looks so durable as if its got teflon top coat on their HH, almost to look artificial.

Hi Lenny, thanks for the heads up. I'm staying well away from sticky tape from now on! I don't mind general wear and tear on my Highwayman, but I would hate to see a perfect square of brown color pulled off

Cheers

A great thread. "Relax" is right. This reminds me of me this morning.

Last spring, I finally was able to purchase an Aero long half belt. By the time I got it (my first Aero, after several years of reading here at FL about them), of course it was too hot to wear it.

This very morning, it's chilly!! I put on my coat - perfect. Stunning! Then, I run into the chain link dog kennel gate, scrape against a steel workbench, the top of my little tiny car, everything else in my path..... get the seat belt buckle tied up in the armor-plated horsehide. I have managed to destroy my coat!!!

Got to work, the coat is fine, I realize that first, I bought it to wear it and second, I'm an idiot. Or, the other way around. Mostly, I relaxed and figured I wouldn't worry about it.
However, I think I'll avoid tape if possible...
