RBH

With all the excitment over the $1000.00 Montecristi for a Ten Dollar Bill I was hoping you guys with a VS panama would post a pic here so we can get an idea of what Art has done and is out there to choose from. [brim, ribbon and crown]
I did a search and if the photos were in one place it would make it so much easier. Please post all styles and kinds.
Thanks in advance!

Sorry but I haven't mastered the art of posting pictures. I just got a camera last weekend. But mine is blocked in the Bogey style that looks exactly like the one Sharpetoys posted. I liked his so much that I had mine done that way. I am very pleased with it. It is about 500 wpi.

Here's my "starter" panama from Art. To my fellow loungers with a bit of mileage, here's a warning. Be prepared to have groups of young ladies approach you and say "Oh my gawd that hat looks so cool on you". Guaranteed to shave off the years (til you catch your reflection). Younger gentleman (and certainly ladies as well), it is the only way to dress for summer. Lurkers and loungers get off your butts. You could win a finer one than mine for $10. Get in the raffle! Good luck er sort of

Eric

As always, my photos do the colors no justice. The ribbon is a rich burgundy.

Here's what I want. Can anyone help me get started?

I want to buy a Montecristi Panama hat...either Optimo style or traditional fedora. The key with me is I want some serious reverse-tapering in the crown and a somewhat higher than normal crown height. Very 1920s style if you get my drift. Does anyone know anyone who can do such, or do I just buy a taller crown from, let's say, www.panamahatsdirect.com, and ask Art Fawcett to re-block it in that style? Thanks in advance for any advice given.

Lulu, I dont know that anyone can give you "serious reverse taper" on an Optimo style panama. You might have to get a special block made for it in your size. Optimo's are normally straight sided or slightly tapered and to my knowledge, have never had reverse taper. What you might be thinking of is the 20's Optimo with tall crown and wide ribbon. The only other way to get reverse taper might be to block it several sizes too big and flange it smaller, giving you the top hat look. Dunno, never tried it.

On the Optimo a perfectly straight side is OK. I just don't want any taper at all. Tall crown and wider ribbon is important. On a traditional fedora, I want to see some reverse-taper and absolutely no tapering inward of the crown. Advice?

I need more specifics Lulu...what are you calling traditional? Center crease would give you front to back reverse taper if blocked on a straight sided block, but teardrop & "C", nor "Bogie" wouldn't give you that effect. The center crease is the only one traditionally done without a formed block, giving you more leeway.

Art (again)...

I guess what I am looking for in the "traditional fedora" style is your "Jazzman" done in straw. Does that help you picture what I want?

By the way, I'm also the one interested in replicating the piano player's hat in the Bamville Club scene at the start of The Cotton Club. Now that's reverse taper!!!;)

Scotrace's is a classic "C" crown, also traditional.
