Pin Curls and Humidity/Haze

Hello everyone, I've been stalking the boards for a while...

I have fine, fine, FINE hair that only wants to lie flat as a board against my head. I hate it. Being a retro-enthusiast, I've been doing pincurls for the last three months to style my hair...I love it! So long as it's a dry day, the curls stay pretty well (they DO fall at the end of the day...but I do a set every night so keeping the same set spry for a couple of days isn't a concern of mine) but when it's humid or hazy...forget it.

I live in Los Angeles. Unfortunately it's that time of year where it's hazy and mucky out until noon or so...which means my pin curls DIE within fifteen minutes of being outside.

I currently use Proclaim setting lotion. I tried the Lottabody ready-to-use but it didn't seem to be any stronger.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

I struggle with this myself (fine hair here too). I've found that trying to keep your hair in a super-moisturized state helps. The reason it frizzes is because it's reaching out for the moisture in the air. The theory is that if there's already enough moisture, the cuticle won't need to attempt grabbing it from the air around you. But with fine hair, you've got to walk that 'fine' line between truly moisturizing your hair and just weighing it down with conditioner. For me, I have great luck with coconut oil deep conditioning a couple of nights a week at first, then a minimum of 1x week as maintenance. But everyone has their own opinions on it and much of it is trial and error. Coconut oil penetrates to the cortex of the hair, hence the reason I use it instead of another type of conditioner or oil. It washes out very easily also and is fairly inexpensive if you buy it at Walmart.

To be completely honest, I give up on curls for the months of July, August and September, here in the Mid-Atlantic. Yesterday, it was 80F with 98% humidity. I stick to snoods and scarves. However, about a week ago, I tried a new-to-me setting lotion called Motions, found in the ethnic hair care section. This has helped tremendously! It really holds.

I can't relate to the fine hair issue, as I have more hair than I know what to do with, but I can relate to the humidity, being in Southwest Florida. Pomade helps me a lot. Before I brush out my set, I put a tiny bit on my hands, and run that over my curls, from midway to the ends. Then I brush, adding more as needed. It takes some practice, I had some days where I looked greasy until I got a good feel for it, and found the right kind (I use Got2Be Defiant, it has some hold as well as not being very greasy), but now I can't live without the stuff!

you can try setting with linseed (or flaxseed) lotion. It worked better for me in regard to humidity. But, it also dulls the shine a bit.
