I was actually going to post this question inside another thread but I didn't want to steal anyones' thunder.

So please educate me on this:

Would you purchase a higher weave count if you planned on keeping a panama hat for a longer period? Would a low weave count not last long?

I recently purchased a 130 count Monticristi and I enjoy the hat. However, I was buying on price rather than quality because I'm a little low on funding. Have I made some unforseen mistake? Are there things I need to know in order to maintain the quality of my hat?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Just keep your Montecristi Panama from drying out... Mist it once a month with water or take into the bath room while you shower and give it a steam bath.... Don't leave it in a locked up hot car etc...

Here is a 1923 Casa Arcentales Montecristi Panama Hat. The hat was sent from an Ecuadorian Diplomat to the US Secrectary of State. The hat was in a wooden box and has the original pricetag which listed $150.00 dated Feb 1923. The hat was blocked by Graham at Optimo Hat Co of Chicago. He said it was the finest Montecristi he's ever seen. It is the finest Montecristi I've ever seen.

The leather and the ribbon are originals from the box. The weight of the hat is 1 ounce. The weave is so fine that it is hard to count, but the weaves per square inch is in excess of 2800. I counted 42 vueltas. The brim width is 2 7/8 and the crown is 4 1/2 inches.

A fantastic hat Sharpetoys!
Your hat is the reason I had Art work on my panama. That is such a classic shape. And from what I have seen of ads from the 1920's to the 1930's the 'optimo' style was quite common.

Robert, I think I got you another sale over from Cigar Weekly. Said he ordered the $99 Havana.

Is wearing my Montecristi all summer long in New Orleans the same as taking it into the bathroom while I shower? It feels the same to me.

And at the same time, the nation of Ecuador would send a Montecristi panama hat as a gift to each new U.S. president. If Sharpetoy's incredible panama was for a 'mere' Secretary of State, imagine what the quality was of the panama given to the President of the United States! The mind boggles ...

Hey Sharpetoys, didn't you talk about putting that hat in a museum. It would be hard to part with but it sure does need to be preserved. You are a very lucky man, sir.:p
