Paintings that showcase vintage fashion

They have popped up here from time to time, but I thought they deserved a thread of their own:
Portraits that showcase vintage fashion.
I think they are important counterpart to photography for several reasons.
One is colour, so often missing from the photographs of the time.
Another is the artist's subjective depiction of the subject's personality and his clothes, which can be inspiring.

Here are some good ones, mainly from the inter-war period.

One of the things I enjoy about Edward Hopper paintings (like the one below) are the period clothing - stylized, yes - but he captures the essence. And Otto Dix - as noted above - is another favorite of mine who also captures period clothing well, with more detail than Hopper, but still a great feel for it.

Saw this at the Met a few weeks ago - incredibly powerful in person.

Not much of a painter, but one of my favorite period artists, Peggy Bacon, who trafficked in a slightly askance view of her contemporary human beings.

This lithograph is of journalist, radical and perennial candidate for "worst dressed man in New York," Heywood Broun.

I always love the way Denys Wortman - a very successful illustrator of the era - captures clothing in his work, like this one:

Another favorite who also has an incredible feel for capturing the essence of Golden Era clothing style is Jack Vettriano:

A contemporary artist, David Uhl, really captures the golden age. While focusing, mainly on motorcycles, he also does other subjects.

Herringbonekid, I am impressed with both Laura Knight and Rex Whistler. On first blush, I particularly like the Knight one of the gentleman reading the book and the last two Whistler ones. Whistler has some similarity in style with Otto Dix (whom I posted on earlier in this thread).

the last two are by Meredith Frampton, not Whistler... sorry my captioning could have been clearer. he did several of these painstakingly realistic portraits. apparently his output was rather small because they took so long. have a look at his 'portrait of a young woman' (with cello) from 1935.

Your captioning was fine, I just missed it. It is funny, the last two felt different from the top ones, but I wasn't astute and didn't pick up that it was a different artist. That aside, I just looked up "Portrait of a Young Women" and it is stunning.

Golden Age Women

Every year David Uhl is commissioned to do a commemorative painting for Daytona Bike Week. This year, he found an old photo from a German news paper. He said, he tried to use modern models, but they just didn't look right, so he secured the rights to the photo. I think he really captured the photo!

Wonderful HBK. The love of detail of Frampton is outstanding.

Rex Whistlers work reminds of the paintings of an Iranian artist of the 1930-40s, Ali-Asghar Petgar.
