I think of it more as a short vacation trip to Uncanny Valley.

If one wants to visit "a terrifying nightmare world of fear and hallucination" as Miss Maine so perfectly expresses it, imagine a realistic CGI (or better yet, VR) version of, say, Fleischer's "Swing You Sinners". That experience might we'll be sufficient to cause a full break, though it would be instructive to anyone who survived it with their sanity intact.

Actually I think it's cuddly stop motion animation rather than CGI but that is just a mere detail.
