Hi
I want to get a non-traditional Campaign hat. In short, I don't want to go with an Olive Montana Peaked hat with a completely flat brim because I already have one. I don't plan on wearing this hat every day, therefore I don't want to blow the bucks to have Hatman Jack to make me a 50% beaver one ($500), or even go by the Beaver brand factory and try that ($300). I have two options, the first is a Stratton in Tan (3 inch brim). A second option appears to be buying an Akubra Sombrero (4 and a half inch brim with a 6 inch crown).
I'm looking at something on the order of a 4 inch brim with a normal Montana Peak crown of 5.5 inches or more. I measured the Stratton I have and it's 5.5 inch crown and 3 inch brim. These are something like the style I'm after:
Possibly with a brim shape like:
I'm having a problem uploading the two pictures, but a link to the page they're on is:

I have a couple of questions about the Akubra Sombrero. How much does the crown taper? I'd like to have a fairly wide (1.5 inches) ribbon. From visiting with Hatman Jack, I know that a hat with a lot of taper doesn't allow for a wide Ribbon. How stiff is the felt on an Akubra?
I'm looking at a Whiskey colored Campaign hat at the darkest, and a beige one at the lightest. I plan on a dark brown, Olive (to match the Centennial Scout uniform) or Deep Maroon 1.5 inch wide ribbon with a two loop bow. I also plan on a trimmed Pencil curl brim if I get the Akubra.
It appears that the Stratton will work, and I can get one for around $100.00 in Kansas City. Binding the brim and adding a new ribbon will be another $30 or so. I'd rather have the Akubra Sombrero if it the taper is right and if it's stiff enough. The brim on the Stratton isn't wide enough to do a pencil curl.
So, how much taper does an Akubra have? Can I put a 1.5 inch ribbon on it?
How stiff is the Akubra? The Stratton's are stiff as a board seem to be very thick felt.
Thanks
