New Stains on Old Vintage

Hello everyone,

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything.

The hubby was kind enough to buy a beautiful early 1940s wool coat for me. Well, he bought it, I'm paying it off in instalments.

Today I, shock horror, found a small lipstick stain right under the belt. I'm pretty sure it was my fault.

Any idea on how to get it out? Assuming it's wool with small cashmere content from my textile knowledge. Can I dry clean it? Or is it likely to deteriorate?

Thank you so much. I'm sorry I've been MIA lately. This costume degree of mine throws me a few curve balls now and then.

I don't know terrible much, so please do get a second opinion!

I'd start by blotting the stain, not rubbing - I'd imagine that rubbing would work it into the wool. Some lipsticks can contain proteins, so don't use heat on it at all.

Other than that and dry cleaning, I might try some diluted woolite. Of course, it's probably not the first lipstick stain an old wool coat has gotten. I'm not sure what else I'd use, though.

I'd see if I had a scrap of wool or wool blend fabric floating around somewhere, smear some of the same lipstick on it, and test different things on that. First thing I'd try would be makeup remover.
