One of the greatest characters of not only The Golden Age but the 1960's, Simon Templar, known as "The Saint" will be returning to TV. Originally, there was talk of doing it as a period piece but that never materialized. James Purefoy will play Templar. All good - except when filmmaker Barry Levinson released this description last month:

Simon Templar is part of a secret organization known as 'Knights of the Templar'. He's responsible for enforcing the group's code of ethics against the criminal underground of the world. Those familiar with 'Knights' know Simon Templar by one name: The Saint. His current assignment has him in Montenegro, rescuing captive children from being sold on the black market. When the operation is finished, Templar discovers that one of the children is missing. An orphan once himself, he vows to rescue the lost boy, no matter what the cost. Waiting for him in Paris is Patricia Holm, an intelligence specialist and Templar's lover. She has information that a crooked businessman named Carger is responsible for the children's abductions; however, the Knights learn that Carger is now into much bigger things. The Saint is ordered to find Carger and steal a treasured relic that, if made public, could ignite a spectacular holy war. When he discovers Carger has also been keeping the missing orphan as his own son, Templar must decide between his own personal convictions and his duties as The Saint.

WHAT THE @$$*&!!!???? Why do they feel they have to "fix" a character that has been popular since 1928? It sounds like a crappy mix between James Bond and the DaVinci Code. Roger Moore is a co-exec producer. How can he allow this? They wanted to return the character to his swashbuckling roots like we saw throughout the 30's and 40's. Hollywood already screwed it up once with Val Kilmer back in the 90's. So what gives with that lousy decription?

Well, I hardly watch much television as it is; but assuming I even check this one out, I'll do so with a grain of salt. I'm very partial to the golden age characters from radio and movies, and it seems like modern-day remakes don't do the original stories and characters justice.

Current TV with its stress on reality shows is so shallow..I hope drama is on its way back on primetime TV

That post threw me for a second - Al Gore's cable channel which telecasts user-created news (made by and for young people) is called Current TV. I had to re-read it to get that you were talking about modern TV programming. Yeah - most of the reality stuff is awful. But it is cheap and most undiscriminating viewers will watch it. Give me news and documentaries if you want to do "reality" programs.

I remember the late 70s' "The Saint", with Ian Ogilvy in the lead role.
I would have been about 12 when I saw it.
Haven't seen it since I done growed up, though.
Lots of filming on location, if I remember correctly and he drove an XJS Jag.

The Saint always seems to be changed to the new "thing". The original stories were different from the George Sanders films, the Roger Moore was different from Sanders, etc.
Now if he had a car that turned into a robot, that would be cool. ;)

Sincerely,
the Wolf

He did drive a Jag. The producers wanted Moore's Saint to drive a Jag but the company wouldnt give them the needed amount of cars for production. By the time of RETURN, they came to their senses.
The shows have a really dated 70's feel to them and Ogilvy's clothes were just horrible. Lots of flaired pant legs and wide-open shirts.

The Saint returned for several made for TV movies in the late 80's with Simon Dutton. Those were not very successful though. Then came that godawful Kilmer movie!
