After months of lurking around the lounge I have finally joined up.
First of all I want to thank all of you for giving me soo much information from all of the posts I have read over the past months. With that information I now am the proud owner of two Quality felt fedoras, one straw hat, and a Panama hat from Panama Bob I won on ebay.
For several years I have been wearing crushable wool felt fedoras. They only seem to last me a couple of years before they shrank to the point of looking like a elf hat. I never knew about all of the quality differences that exist between modern production hats and the older ones. But thanks to all of you I now know!
First of all here is the kind of hat I wore since I was 14
That last one worked great but the combination of saltwater and jelly fish raining down on me caused it to last a mere 4 months of Alaska's commercial fishing industry.
This was my first quality fedora from ebay. It's a Dobbs with a 2.25 inch brim and a 4.5 inch crown with a C crown. It's felt is nice and stiff but super thin. Only 1/16" thick. Oh and I really like the 3/4" grosgrain ribbon. There is a sticker under the leather band that says: To Duplicate TE 5342 and BLOCK 611. When I received it, it was quite dirty and very dusty. So I went down to my local hatter (I'm so lucky to have one right around the corner) to get it cleaned and blocked. I picked it up a week and a half later and it was awesome. There are some stains on the ribbon that were not removed. Any tricks to clean it guys? This is my every day hat no matter where I go I wear it. It was an ebay hat I won for $9.99. No idea what age this is. Any guesses?
This was another ebay hat for only ten bucks. Now this is a fine fine gentleman's hat. 1.5" stingy brim with a 4" crown and a 1.75" ribbon. This is thick heavy felt with a nice lining. Oh and it's a Royal Stetson. The main reason I bought this hat (I was unsure about the stingy brim on me) was because it is from J.L. Hudson company in Detroit. Husdsons went out of buisness in 1983 and I own one of the bricks from when it was torn down in the mid 90's. It's a piece of history from my fair city. I think this hat is from the late 40's early 50's from what I have read about stingy brimbs being popular. This is my dress hat. Sunday dinner with mother or any occasion that calls for formal wear. Great hat all around though but I won't be taking it camping or hiking like my Dobbs.
This last hat was a gift from one of my customers who admired my Dobbs and she gave me this nice straw hat. It's a good work hat. 4" crown with a 1.25" brim. Breathable and comfortable. Unknown maker.
This hat is another Royal Stetson that I acquired through ebay. It is my dress hat. I will not wear it unless I am dressed in a suit. I believe that I would not do the had justice wearing it with jeans and a t-shirt. It has a 4.5" crown with a 2" brim.
This last hat I purchased today from a local vintage shop. I don't know what exactly the style is called (newsboy, driving cap?). I have had 5 complements on how good it looks on me today! I have no idea if it is true vintage or "new" vintage. It looks and smells old. I would like to find another like this only in a dark green plaid. Anyone have one?
